LAHORE: A 50-year-old man committed suicide in Old Anarkali on Thursday after he lost his month’s salary on a bet on the cricket match between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Muhammad Shafiq, a junior clerk in the Punjab Irrigation Department, was found hanged in his office on Church Road.

Muhammad Ramzan said his brother Shafiq had gambled his pay of Rs30,000 away on a match which Pakistan lost to Bangladesh. “My brother committed suicide after losing money on the match,” Ramzan told Dawn.

The irrigation officials alerted the police after finding Shafiq hanged with the fan on the second floor of the building. Police removed the body to morgue for autopsy and later handed it over to the family after completing legal formalities.

Investigating Officer ASI Manzoor said the man was involved in gambling on cricket matches from some years. He said the gambler bet on the Asia Cup match and after losing the money committed suicide.
