SUKKUR: A carcass of a blind dolphin, which appeared to have died about a week ago, washed ashore on the bank of the Indus river near here on Thursday.

People of the area said that they had noticed the dolphin, which was visibly injured, in the river for some days and informed the wildlife department but it did not take any steps to rescue it in time.

The staff of the wildlife department removed the carcass it to its centre to conduct post-mortem examination to probe whether the dolphin died after getting entangled in a fishing net or there were other reasons for its death.

The carcass was said to be three feet long and weighed between 25 and 30 kilogramme.

The wildlife department and WWF spend a huge amount annually on preservation of the endangered species but the dolphins continued to die thanks to traditional lethargy and irresponsible attitude of government functionaries.
