KARACHI, Dec 28: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro has said coordinated efforts have been undertaken for good governance, improvement of financial matters and provision of facilities in the province.

He was talking to the participants of the 31st PN staff course at the Governor’s House on Friday.

The governor said that by ensuring merit, transparency, monitoring and fiscal discipline, the Sindh Public Service Commission and the Public Accounts Committee have been made more effective.

He stated that efforts had also been made for the generation of new resources and to check wastage.

Responding to a question about the existing water scarcity related problems in Karachi, Mr Soomro said in addition to improving and streamlining the water distribution system in the city, drastic measures were underway, including the new K3 project, to mitigate the sufferings of the people.

“Special emphasis has also been laid on utilization of recycled water for gardens and construction purposes as appropriate and needed laws would be promulgated in this connection” he added.

Presenting his point of view over a number of questions regarding status of education, the governor said that in order to eliminate the dominance of some elite private schools, the duration of public institutions needed to be enhanced which in the long run would ensure provision of quality education to every deserving student.

He claimed that the government could be credited for paying special attention to women education. Effective efforts have been made for teachers’ training, phasing out the menace of ghost employees and ensuring regular attendance of teachers and students,” he remarked.

Mr Soomro also mentioned the steps taken for the provision of medical facilities in rural areas and for ensuring attendance of medical staff at the health centres.

He said steps were also being taken for improving transport system, widening of roads, construction of flyovers, ensuring the flow of traffic and operating wide buses.

To a question, the governor said the new system of local government is absolutely different from that of the basic democracy system and that under the new system people have been included in the transfer of power to grassroots level and they have been provided the opportunities to resolve their own problems.

The government, he said, has envisaged and implemented a number of measures to check pilferage of national exchequer and tapping new resources for upgrading living standard of people in the province.
