‘Indian government set to reject BCCI plea for Pakistan series’

ISLAMABAD: The chances of a bilateral series between India and Pakistan have taken a hit as reports are rife that the Indian government has raised an objection to it and is set to reject the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) plea for the same.
“The government has given us an indication that public sentiment at the moment is not in favour [of the series]. Also, there are only a few days left for the proposed series to start [in the latter half of December]. If the government wanted us to play, we would have received clearance long time ago. So, I don’t think this series is happening,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times on Friday.
After a lot of debate and discussion, Sri Lanka emerged as a possible venue for Pakistan’s ‘home’ series but the Indian government has poured cold water over BCCI’s intentions. Even Sarbananda Sonowal, the sports minister, had thrown his weight behind BCCI’s hope to have an India-Pakistan series, saying the board needs to be supported.
“We play Pakistan in the World Cup. We played them in the 2015 World Cup, will play them next year in the Asia Cup. Then will again play them in the month of March in the World T20. So when you play them in a multinational tournament in world events, then what stops you from playing them in a bilateral series? So that’s the question we have to answer,” Anurag Thakur, the BCCI secretary, was quoted as saying.

There is no reason to hurriedly arrange a series. I don't know who is gaining what from this. For Indian team it will be far better to utilize this break to prepare well for Australia series and have proper understanding and good planning to play Pakistan next year. Security situation is improving in Pakistan so hopefully next year India can play Pakistani home series in Pakistan.

This is back stabbing by the bcci. When they were aware that they won't get the permission, why did they lie to the PCB about a possible cricket series. They got what they wanted The big 3. What a coward act as part of Indian promise. After signing the MoU, the tax payers as well Indian Govt. is backing out with NO reason. Ask yourself, if a the same Indian have done to any other country than what would have been the out come. No point playing series in this fashion. Pak should demand ICC to play their matches outside India simply on security concerns . If Aamir khan is under stress, surely Pak team's performance will be sub-optimal during world cup. Shiv sena, RSS and associates will make sure of that . Politics mixed with sports, really sad

My honest suggestion is for some time there should be no sports , cultural and trade contacts between these countries - a complete freeze... until the time both the countries really feel the need for the other. When such a time comes, we could see the terror activities are stopped, then we could see the signs of the need for the other. Only then let's think of starting cultural activities. Pakistan should even stop showing the bollywood movies, prevent its actors in working in bollywood films, stop cultural programs by both India and Pakistan artists...imports and exports of each other's products, etc.etc.

@Deepak This is wrong,yes BCCI got big3 but it was not conditional as said by PCB to pakistan public.PCB was force to vote as a last man standing.PCB then has relied too much on SLC and CSA but both of them willfully supported the reform and got what they want.Back then PCB got no choice except obliging.PCB could have done better for pak cricket but instead indulged in silly confrontation with BCCI at ICC in important reform process knowing very well it cant win.Then despite knowing why they oppose???.This is similar to your question "despite being aware that they won't get the permission, why did they lie to the PCB about a possible cricket series??".

Mr Dogra I have read the agreement and understood it also, please answer:
1. If Pakistan would have accepted an offer to play in India then where is GOVT. approval!!!
2. If security is the issue than as agreed then matches should been played in UAE where IPL have already been played!!!
3. As per MoU, it was the responsibility of the respective board to take approval from Govt., which in first place was always NO from India. Again pure example of double standard.
4. The issue and thread if Pakistan backed of from ICC planned T20 World Cup, which India will be liking but not by ICC.
As BCCI itself has mentioned that it Conflict of Interest as being part of Big 3, which I am sure time will tell how wrong they were when they planned and execute the idea.

Every one knows playing in ICC tournaments with Pakistan is a compulsion which we avoid only at the risk of fines and penalties from the world cricket body. On the other hand, playing a bilateral series is not a compulsion, so it can be skipped for many reasons and plotical reasons are not excluded. that is so simple. Every one knows this fact, but then all are behaving rather naively on the topic.

I don't see the big deal, both public nations do not want to see the teams playing each other, thats on the cards, so why all the fuss? both countries should block each other totally, in terms of trade, air space, cultural diversification etc. i think this way both nations can get on with their own business and at least 25-50 years no exchanges should be made at all. Im positive both nations will welcome this and bring this childish fuss to a successful end.

PCB should come to its senses. I would love to see this series happen, but I recognize that with the hostility floating about between India and Pakistan, the situation is not ripe for a bilateral series. Let us all cool down a bit and we can then not only play cricket but also freely visit each other and be normal, friendly neighbors. Until then, PCB should concentrate on strengthening the cricket structure within the country and stop running after something that is beyond its reach. By the way, I am a Pakistani.

How does the government know that the majority of Indians are opposed to the series? Simply because they won overwhelmingly in the elections and they themselves are rabid Pakistan baters? If the government adopts a mature discourse then it will open itself up to dialogue. I do think there are serious security concerns in india for Pakistani cricketers and fans. Under the current circumstance I do not think Pakistan should be playing in India until the situation gets better which I do not see it happening soon. Pakistan should not be going to India for bilateral or any ICC events including T20 until these extreme elements are subdued. As much as I want india and Pakistan play against , I do not want to jeopardize safety of Pakistanis cricketers.

Playing the series in Sri Lanka for the purpose of just playing is bad for India’s image as a democratic nation and its people.

As a Pakistani I am AGAINST this series. I am not sure other then some financial gains what is there. If you say good bilateral relationship, then both sides needs to be honest and faithful and Indian leaders don't want that. Pakistan should look other options, may be little less financial gains but respect!

@Concerned Fully AGREE. No sports. No educational. No fashion. No trade. No 'support' by bailing out each other facing 'over/under supply' of anything.
Focus on other trade. Proximity makes Pakistan-India interaction beneficial for both.

@Sheraz Series is planned at very short span of time and Australia is coming next.looking into the performance of indian team they definitely need some practice.We really hope that we could play a series in Pakistan as situation is improving.We should scrap this series and play a big series consisting of test odi's and t20 not in a neutral venue but in either of our countries.
