PML-N leads, PTI follows as ECP receives Islamabad LG poll results

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) took the lead as Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) received the results of the local government (LG) polls held in Islamabad on Monday, DawnNews reported on Tuesday.

District Returning Officer Aleem Shahab has sent ECP the results of all Union Councils of the federal capital.

According to the results released by DRO, PML-N has secured 19 chairman seats while rival Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) came in second, with 17 chairman positions.

Independent candidates emerged as the third largest entity, grabbing a total of 13 seats.

The DRO told media that in one Union Council, UC-4, the winner will be decided by a toss as the vote count ended in a tie between the candidates.

Residents of Islamabad went to the polls on Monday amidst tight security to elect local representatives for the first time under the newly-minted Islamabad Local Government Act, 2015.

PTI leader Asad Umar announced on Twitter that his party is filing recount application on at least eight seats while the party chairman Imran Khan announced that PTI will be putting up its candidate for Mayor in Islamabad.

The last such exercise was held under military rule in 1979 on a non-party basis and was limited to rural areas only.

Islamabad, which now has a population of around two million, had been divided into 50 union councils for the polls.

Around 2,407 candidates took part in the elections, of which 972 were independent candidates, 506 belonged to PML-N, 479 to PTI, 164 to Jamaat-i-Islami and 81 to the PPP, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Recounting is the right of candidates. Once recounting is done then no one will have an excuse. Problems arise when other sides block petitions for years.

@cheebz Sure go for recounting and no one should have any objection because it is your right. But if recounting proves PTI's defeat then accept it. PTI has long history of refusing to accept the verdict from Wajiuddin Commission report to Judicial commission report even after saying that it will accept the verdict whatever it may be.

If this is how elections are going to be decided then I'm afraid they should decide the whole of the election on tosses. Either a re-election is appropriate or make both candidates share the role 50% along with authority over 50% of development fund for each to spend on community.

In this past LG election in Pakhtunkhwa, several seats were won by PTI candidates but re-polling in presence or Pak army rendered different results. Most PTI candidates who initially won the seats lost in re-polling and 22 people lost their lives. The election was rigged by PTI current administration. Where are the consequences for corrupt governance there?

Well recounting and constant nagging by PTI is getting annoying l; however, if it allows to bring positive changes on all levels which would bring benefits in the long run then we all should accept it. After all ,we all want Pakistan to prosper, yet we reelect the same people who have been a source of misery to the country for generations. I am not saying that PTI is the best but perhaps we need a change because right now PTI is the only party which haven't been accused of torture, oppression, financial corruption, murder, etc. Yes they are a young party and their exposure to politics are meager in comparison to PMLN and PPP, Jamal Islami etc, but at least PTI economic policies make sense which brings long term benefits to the people of Pakistan.

i am amazed at people dont you live in Pakistan what is ever fair in Pakistan and i think his right in going for recounting as you can imagine education results are manipulated university results are plots are reallocated, munshi's take them out from under the real owners feet for bribes so what is so wrong in asking for a recount in such a corrupt and no accountability country that thrives on looting and plundering of national wealth by these politicians who know how to manipulate the system.

Results got changed iver night. Pmln rigging group... cant use fair play. I wonder why mqm and ppp are under scrutiny by agencies but not pmln till now. Selective justice is not justice

First we see PTI leading with 18 seats. Then in the morning next day, suddenly PML N seats increase to 21 and PTI decrease to 16. Now we see PML N with 19 and PTI 17. In 7 UCs PTI was leading and now we see PML N winning there. Asad Umar is right when he says about recounting. Btw a very good performance by PTI.

I voted for PTI because PML(N) proved in last two and half years that they are least interested to solve even basic problems of Islamabadian. It is high time for indepdents to join hands with PTI to elect their candidates for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. We can not ruled out the rigging by PML(N) in urban areas of Islamabad and PTI ask for recounting of votes in urban constituencies.
