Sedition case filed against Aamir Khan for 'anti-national' comments

A sedition case was filed against Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan in Kanpur on Tuesday for his "intolerant" and "anti-national" statement from a day ago, reported Indian news agency ANI.

The hearing for the case has been scheduled for Dec 1.

Advocate Manoj Kumar Dixit, who filed the case against the actor, maintained that Khan's remarks amounted to sedition.

The case has been filed under Indian Penal Code Section 124 A (sedition), 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds), 153 B (Imputations) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief).

Stand by everything I said, not leaving India: Aamir

In response to the criticism he has received, Aamir Khan in a statement on Tuesday said he stands by his comments, adding that "neither I, nor my wife Kiran, have any intention of leaving the country," reported NDTV.

He added: "We never did [have any intention of leaving], and nor would we like to in the future. Anyone implying the opposite has either not seen my interview or is deliberately trying to distort what I have said. India is my country, I love it, I feel fortunate for being born here, and this is where I am staying."

Just a day ago, Khan had said he was "alarmed and shaken" by the number of incidents related to extremism in India, Indian news agency PTI reported.

Addressing an audience at the Ramnath Goenka journalism awards, the actor known for his unique and outstanding on-screen work said growing insecurity in India has alarmed him, adding that he and wife Kiran Rao do not feel the country was safe for their children.

"My wife Kiran Rao even suggested we should probably leave India," Aamir told the audience.

Aamir Khan claimed his sense of insecurity has increased in the past few months and laid stress upon those in power to strongly condemn such incidents.

In response, Senior Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam on Tuesday slammed Aamir Khan's "alarm" over extremism in India, saying he should "go to Pakistan" if "he does not want to stay here", The Hindu reported.

@Pakman The root cause is finally all the black money routed to Congress treasury in last 18 months. Now again they are richer than BJP. Public perception about Congress is Corrupted where as about BJP is communal. Now Congress will continue playing the communal card as they can not compete with BJP or Modi on development and morality. Where as in reality India has much lesser communal incidents in last 18 moths. BTW, every anti BJP force will be benefited out of a communal mishap.

Famous celebrity like Amir Khan should be careful in choosing words before speaking in media or public. If the same words were told by some tom-deek-harry, this would not have created this type of situation. But I'm surprised what exactly happen to Amir and his family? Few months age, with Modi he described it as "Incredible India"; suddenly it became "Intolerant India" to him and his family. Is it really a concern or another financial-acting to gain more publicity? I think Amir was not amongst those who used to do this type of cheap publicity. May be another "conspiracy" theory example.

Aamir Khan is an Indian citizen of great stature. One just has to go over his involvement in social projects. Satyamev Jayate - a project where pre-research was not only dangerous but in a country like ours life-threatening. But he did it! For which he must be saluted! Look at his movies in the last few years. He is working to present the ailments of Indian society through his movies (Tare jameen par, 3 Idiots, Pk). He is a great social worker, working to bring a change in our society. And if we forget about our leaders of the past, I do not see many role models in India. We need good role models with high morals & principles. In my opinion Aamir Khan is one who stands taller than the tallest in this regard. Who cares what these power hungry, nationalist goons have to say!

Amir khan is living and working in Mumbai from ages.when Mumbai riots erupted in 1992.when bomb lasted in Mumbai.when terrorists were attacking Mumbai 2008.he never thought of his safety.and leaving out of Mumbai.now when he is most protected citizen of Mumbai saying that he fears for his life and his kids. That is clearly showing bias against Modi gov.if he is not happy with gov.then can criticize it.but how can he claim whole India to be intolerant.

So, let me see. Amir Khan got to practice Islam without fear. Marry a Hindu woman, but still raise kids as Muslims. He got to make tons of movies and became a big star. Then he made a movie mocking Hindu superstitions and got paid and became famous for that. Show one Hindu that can do this in Pakistan and or any other Muslim country and then talk about India's intolerance.

Amir Khan's comments look slightly suspicious.He has never said a word when the Congress party was in power,and it was in Congress rule that the worst anti Muslim riots took place in post independence India(eg Bhagalpur,Mumbai,Meerut,Aligarh,Bhiwandi etc).Even after the worst anti Sikh riots (massacre)in Delhi after Indira Gandhi's assasination, not a single person said anything like that.Definitely Amir must critisise Modi,BJP,Shiv Sena etc but he should be careful before giving bad words to India 'badnaam'

This response from India against Aamir is the evidence of growing intolerance in India. If Aamir Khan was a Hindu and had given same statement he would have not received this harsh backlash. I can name many Hindus that have said same thing but nobody responded at this level. Why? Can't an Indian citizen express his freedom of speech and he didn't said anything that terrible where people want him to leave the Country? Why Indians can't face the reality?? It is almost like Hindus feel they have done favor for allowing Indian Muslims to live in India.

Any person of any citizenship has right to freedom of speech and mobility. This means that Amir Khan can say whatever he wants and move to another location in India or anywhere in the world that he wishes. If spoken words will lead to violence then law must takes its course. India, by being a multi-religious country, remains amazing tolerant country but some statements made by some people in public domain can cause ripples and politicians can and will take full advantage of it. It seems Amir Khan is being used by anti- RSS ( or anti - Modi ) forces and he may or may not know it.

You can disagree whether the sedition case is justified or not but whoever filed this case is allowed by law to do so. Aamir Khan spoke what was on his mind and that is his right as an Indian citizen. Other citizens can also do what is legally allowed. No idea why filing a sedition case is intolerant. This happens all the time to public personalities in India. Aamir Khan is not special.

@I tell you Yes, I would, and do, criticize the way a lot of things are in my country Pakistan. I do, because I am intensely patriotic and want the faults to be resolved. I see Amir Khan as being similarly patriotic to his own land and people and pointing to the defects in the hope of improving things. BTW, we in Pakistan, who have too often and too long suffered the twin scourges of dictatorship and intolerance, have usually looked up with admiration to the stable democratic values we perceived India as possessing. But, when we observe the furor Mr Khan's remarks have kicked up, we find it both amazing and deeply disappointing.

If we are debating tolerance. Amir spoke his him. He expect people to be tolerant. So nobody stopped him from voicing his opinion. Now Indians are talking their mind. And Amir should be tolerant enough by letting them speak.

More than 100 awards returned by poets,artists,actors,file cases against all those who feel India moving towards intolerantcy.The case is nothing but to get cheap publicity by an unknown.

@AD Do you really feel one would declare his decision to leave country in a public forum shouting intolerance just before the release of his upcoming film?? And the next day takes a U turn as his objective of free publicity for his film met at the cost of communal disharmony.

@I tell you why does he have to explain anything to anyone the man has a right to his opinion he has the right to express that opinion why should it cause any trouble, if people do not like what he say cover your ears, its all about politics and the Gov stirring trouble, i was under the impression that India was a Dem not a state ran by Hitler.

@I tell you so what if he insulted the whole country what he said was correct its the truth that hurts would you not say? you should hear the things people here in the UK say about DC and the queen and other people of ethnic origins no one takes it as an insult because those people saying have a right to that opinion they can say whatever they like thats because we are a free country and we have free speech unlike India where you cannot say anything without INSULTING the whole country some of you in India need to get a life and stop worrying what people say and stop getting insulted so easily . you have gangs of men raping and killing young girls sort them out that should be more important.

Aamir Khan has right to criticise govt and /or BJP. But instead he choose the words which criticise the nation instead. That is why there is so much of backlash. If somebody is feeling so insecure that he/she mulling to leave the country then there might be few thousand people might have left the country but instead few thousand choose to be Indian from Bangladesh Second point if he really thought about leaving and thought about what previliges he might have to leave would have prevented him. Can he earn fame and $$ ? Can he enjoy the same celebrity status No
