Miandad, Sarfraz call for Waqar’s removal

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: Former Test cricketers Javed Miandad and Sarfraz Nawaz on Wednesday expressed disappointment over Pakistan’s loss in the third ODI against England.
Talking to APP, Miandad alleged that the playing XI was selected keeping in view the likes and dislikes of head coach Waqar Younis so was responsible to a great extent for the defeat.
He claimed that opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad had also been a victim of the coach as he had some disciplinary issues with the coach and team management.
“Why did the Pakistan Cricket Board select Shehzad for T20s and not ODIs?” he questioned.
He said the nepotism was damaging the players and team’s performance.
Speaking about ex-England captain Michael Vaughan who raised doubts on Pakistan’s loss in the third ODI, Miandad said he did not want to comment on it but it was time to bring in a new coach.
Former Test cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz said captain Azhar Ali and coach were responsible for the defeat.
Commenting on Vaughan’s allegations, Sarfraz said Waqar was also the coach on Pakistan’s tour to England in 2010 when the spot-fixing controversy involving Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt occurred.
“I feel Waqar should be removed and a new coach be brought in,” he said.
Sarfraz said Azhar should also be questioned regarding Vaughan’s allegations and an inquiry report should be conducted on priority basis.
Bari, Aamir surprised at defeats
Meanwhile, former skippers Wasim Bari and Aamir Sohail also experessed their surprise over the successive defeats of Pakistan team in the ODIs.
“It was astounding to see that we failed to match England despite playing in our favourites conditions and environments,” Bari said on Wednesday.
“Unnecessary experimentation and failure to stick to basics were the key reasons for our defeat,” he remarked.
He said it was a mystery why Pakistan’s prime opener in limited over games Ahmed Shehzad is sitting on the bench despite a poor show by other openers in the series so far.
“Shehzad is a batsman in top bracket and can put any bowling attack under pressure. To constantly bench him is really a waste of talent,” he added.
“Pakistan’s catching and fielding has also not been up to the mark,” he maintained.
Aamir also blasted the team management for what he termed perplexing decisions.
“Pakistan’s coaching staff continues to make tactical errors and reshuffling in batting order is creating havoc,” said Aamir.
“We fail to understand change in the batting order after our winning start in the first ODI in Abu Dhabi. Without any shadow of doubt Pakistan is a better team — experience wise and talent wise. But we have paid the penalty due to tactical mistake.”
Former left-arm spinner and chief selector Iqbal Qasim also sounded surprised with the panic-like situation in Pakistan camp.
“The three run-outs of Azhar Ali, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Rizwan broke the back of Pakistan batting and proved fatal for us,” said Iqbal.

I agree with Javed Miandad. Waqar is filled with "ism". He is not good for the team. I like Azhar Ali but he is not captaincy material. Sarfaraz Ahmed should be captain of the ODI team and once Shahid Afridi retires Sarfaraz should be captain for both T20 and ODI. Pakistan won under 15 world cup under Sarfaraz's captaincy and he is a fighter full of energy that is the kind of captain we want right now.

One game and all hell broke lose. Despicable but not surprising of Pakistani exes to come after Waqar like a hungry vultures. Where is the talk of consistency now? The team is getting better. Slowly I agree but we'll get there. You got to stick with them. When was the last time Pakistan had such a potent lineup that every position has a capable enough & international ready backup? And what can I say not surprising of Pakistani media either...always the igniter.

It is not about the last two matches. Pakistan has lost 9 out of its last 11 ODI series and the two which we won must be those against lowly ranked Zimbabwe. It is a bit strange that the patron and the chairman have both done nothing even after losing so many series' for so long time. It seems that there is no understanding between selectors and the coach. I mean if Ahmad Shehzad and Umar Akmal are ill disciplined then why are they being selected at all. And if there is no more an issue of discipline then why are they not being played as they are possibly our best players? I don't think Waqar should go because a foreign coach does not suit our players while in Pakistan all of them are at par with each other.

I support Waqar. Who would you play instead? There is no one. Sharjeel Khan was tried Big Nasir was tried, Shezad was tried and all failed. Its not Waqars fault. A Shehzad is an ordinary player then never progressed despite given lots of chances. If you keep playing the same old failures then PK will remain in 10th position. Now is the time to try and experiment to prepare a solid team for WC in 2019. The time to prepare is not 12 months before WC, its now. Sacrifices must be made.

@Canada - I agree but you need someone who is an opner not someone who is number 5 or 6 to open and someone who is a keeper should play a match in every limited over series to gain international experience and exposure and not play a specialist batman to succumb to pressure.
Can someone show me waqar's own success a bowler and more as a captain at major events.

There are too many changes in team. Each ODI team has a different players shaking the confidence of players and not allowing the Capt Azhar Ali to settle with right combinations. There is too many experiments going on in the team.

Sane voice from Miandad and Sarfraz. Waqar should go as he is full of ism (egoism, nepotism, favouritism and whatever). Azhar ali is not ODI material, but still his recent record is better than mot other Pakistani batsmen and thus should keep playing. As far as batting is concerned, Hafiz and Shahzad seems same (none are too goo, nor they are too bad). Sarfraz with reasonable average and good strike rate obviously deserve a place on batting alone (in all form of cricket, especially test where his average is 46, better than most, though he also has good record in T-20 and ODI), so being wicket-keeping is added advantage in having him in team.
Anyhow, as far as team is concerned, there are few parchi players while many better players are not getting selected. This should be corrected. Rest is fine. I believe once Waqar get sack, team performance would improve.

Waqar was a fast bowler and he should have been a specialist to groom fast bowlers at least. To train spinners and batsmen, PCB has hired Mushtaq and A Flower, respectively. So they doing their job well howeve Waqar has, based on his likes and dislikes, injured/removed very good fast bowlers like Junaid, Aamer, Asif, Omer gul, just to name a few. He is either incompetent or he is involved in some bad activities. So he should be removed from his job.

I agree with Javed and Sarfaraz to remove Waqar as he is the major destabilizing factorn in the team.
Re: Ahmed Shezad, I think he deserves to be on the team purely on merit, here are some stats for audience.
Average of A. Shezad in past 3 years.

Ave: 34.81
One of the best opener David Warner from Australia, his average is 35.91
So please even if you go by stats, A. Shezad is up with the best of the world.

I would agree to whatever these great ex players say.... but would not support their idea to bring in Ahmed Shahzad who have not learned the manners to bat at crucial moments........... another "talent" like "Umar Akmal" but have not seen them in crunch matches against India.... both are "talent" but we will never sever that talent in day light in a cricket ground.

i agree.. whoever sent sarfaraz out at azhars dismissal messed up the whole momentum.. hafeez was playing fluently enough and instead of letting him continue play the way he was, he was passed a message that let sarfaraz be the aggressor and you slow down.. result.. hafiz (31 of first 29 balls and only 12 off next 36 0r something more like that) and then got out. sarfaraz got out next ball.. why send sarfaraz out in the first place.. there has been many a times he should have been promoted he never was.. but this game start was slow as hell.. but then hafeez shifted gears and you instead off sending someone that can stick around and play second fiddle to hafeez mess up the entire momentum..
takes some skills.. coach or captain.. pakistan needs to get rid of both.

I am big fan of Javed and completely disagree with his opinion. Look the the ODI ranking. Pakistan is 8th. Are are fine with Tests and T20, but struggling with ODI. Instead of picking up names to be fired, he should be more specific and advise more technically on how to improve our ranking. I still consider Javed as the best strategist and technician on the field. He should be more supportive of the struggling team rather than asking people to be fired, just becoz Ahmed Shahzad was ignored. Are you telling me that bringing in Ahmed Shahzad and Pakistan team's all ODI problem will be solved. Come on!!

I am also agree with many of the people here. I my opinion following action must be taken to lift Pakistani team in ODI and T20 Format.
1. Remove Waqar, appoint Wasim or any other Pakistani coach not a foreign coach, We already have a foreign coach and he is not showing results (for information I should tell people that Waqar is now national of Australia, His family moved to Australia and he has taken Ausi Passport he is dual national now.
2. Search a solid and attacking batsman, and this search should be launch like an emergency, we need at least 1 batsman like Virat Kohli (Dependable) and AB (Dependable+Attacking+Robust+Brave)
3. We need a batsman like Sangakara, Jayawardene who can bat through the inning and take the team along with.
4. We need a fast bowler like Amir , back in the team who can destroy any batting line up.
5. Fielding must be improved. if not like Aus, SA, or NZ at least like India.

Aside from current defeat, in general waqar yunus has failed to produce a reverse swinging fast bowler which is very unfortunate. Perhaps he wants to sell his secret at a higher rate! Ehsan Adil and Rahat ali are failures of Waqar! Still wahab riaz is the guy for the job but god knows what goes in waqar's head.

It is senseless to talk about sacking Waqar since he is the same coach under which the team has been winning Test Matches.
The only reason for failure in ODIs is the lack of quality players. Ahmed Shahzad, Akmal and Sarfarazare just overhyped players and have never seen consistent performances from them. Then you have the bits and pieces players like Hafeez (who used to bowl), Malik, Maqsood and Anwar Ali.
Name one player in the current Pak squad which is comparable to Amla, AB, Kohli etc.? None. Then how would you expect this team to perform.

I don't think getting Shahzad back in the side will suddenly make us World beaters. These ODI matches don't mean much and Waqar has said he's building a side for the future but even he would have expected better than the school boy stuff we're dishing out. Even Moeen and Rashid are looking dangerous when we're suppose to be good players of spin. No one seems to be sure what position they'll play next, and the comical runouts is the result. Running between wickets is suppose to be basic stuff and we're not watching/not sure what our partner will do next.
We need a psychological mentor and a pep up more than anything else at the moment.

Waqar and Azhar both should be removed immediately. Waqar has damaged the team and its image, wherea Azhar Ali is suitable only for Test Cricket. He is not good at ODIs and T 20 games. Azhar sould be replaced either by Sarafraz (Wk) OR Wahab Riaz as ODI Team Captain. Waqar must be shown the door without delay.

Why thes people surprised. Since 2009, pak have lost 11 out of 13 odi series in UAE. They lost 4-0 to England in 2012 too. Pakistan currently is at 8th place in rankings and that is thoroughly justified. Credit should be given where it's due. England are better than Pakistan in this format.
Pakistan just don't play that brand of fearless cricket anymore. I thought most of these youngsters will play the new style of cricket after watching the world cup but they haven't.
The biggest issue is the inability to rotate strike and to be inventive with shots. I don't think anyone in the Pakistan odi team can play a reverse sweep shot to the boundary.
I think these cricketers should only get paid standard Pakistan daily wage for each match. Maybe then they will realise the importance of the pakistan shirt.

Moreover he has been unable to improve the bowling strengths of the team and Aquib Jawed was a better bowling coach.

I agreed with Miandad, Bari, S.Nawaz, Amir Sh. that Waqar is very much Biased against players in past Razak, S.Akhtar, Yusuf presently with Sarfarz, Shezad, Akmal, personality, psychological problem in his mind, that impact multiple areas of life. These disorders create distress for the person experiencing these symptoms. Waqar Hate other impressive players, even not allowing to use walk man in cricketer Bus. Azhar have no mentor who can teach him captaincy, totally weak & uneducated captain, does not u/standing properly english, every times say I mean, I like, no more, Sharyar should rewind his decision for Captaincy sooner is better.

Under Waqar Younus Pak have played 34 ODI since 2014,lost 20 won 14 five vs Zimb one each vs UAE & Ireland.
In fact only 7 victories in 27 outings with test playing nation.
Proven failure, need to replace Waqar as soon as it could be. Other wise Pakistan is going to play qualifying round for WC-2019

@Adnan W.Yunus coaching played 34 ODI, since 2014 20 lost 14 won (5 with Zimb,2 Ireland) B class team only result 7 wins with Class-A less than win 25% losing 62.5% poor performance, similar performance is Azhar ali Bagla lost win again SL B. waqar a puppet Captain not own choice, we lost against england due to Azhar captaincy bcs he did not used bowler Irfan /Wahab/Anwer against James Tay & Buttler slow bowling settled down them. this is the weakness of captaincy and coach no message been sent to captain neither he u/stand. it is upto PCB to keep WAQAR and AZHAR and loose WC 2019 ??????

Yusuf, Sikander. Inz (No more foreign coach we had hard burn when Mush appointed Shoukat Aziz as FM & PM, he came empty bag went with full containers and bank balance, even he took one plot in CDA in Police society ) image this. we need two change Waqar & Azhar these two guy have no moral authority to be coach and captain. The issue is with our batting. We play too defensively. Other teams are making 350 plus scores regularly now and we are struggling even to get to 250. Ahmed Shehzad, Hafeez and Shoaib Malik are never going to be the building blocks for the WC team for 2019. We all know what Ahmad Shahzad did in 2011 and 2015 WC, Hafeez will always struggle in swinging conditions and next world cup is in England. Look at other teams and their players warner, kohli, Williamson, ABD, Morgan. All top teams have atleast 2 or 3 game changer batsmen, we do not have even 1. Sacking Waqar will not do any good, he cannot bat himself in the ground. But lets atleast given him credit for putting up a good T20 and test team, plus he has strengthened our bowling with the current lot of available resources. Our problem is batting , batting and batting, until we do not start putting up good scores and stop choking while chasing we cannot come among the top 4 ODI teams.

Coaching has never improved anything in this team. The players play as per their skill and mind. They dont listen to any thing coach tells them. (that is If coach tells them something worth following)
Not many players hold patience to execute a strategy. Hence we often see the famous Paksitani batting collapse.
and yes Waqar Yunus must go. He is worthless.

Miandad did already say something is not right in the team. There are a lot of things going on behind the scene as YK said he doesnt want to comment on the reasons he left. Waqar has got a fragile ego its clear from the way he carries himself. Who sits miles away from the players on his own in the middle of a match? Shehzad isnt that good but at least he gets a few runs on the board. Azhar Ali should come in at 3 and Sarfraz's wicket keeping is rubbish against spinners but hes far better than Akmal and the best you have. Azhar Ali is not a captain either, just a batsman, captain should be Imad Wasim or Sarfraz.

@Hyder :Javed/Amir S.Bari & S.Nawaz all are giving good advic to remove Coach & Captain .Waqar failed twice as coach involved in nepotism, ignoring talent. personal like dislike.
Manager Intikh must give movement of Azhar ali & Waqar meeting and activities to PCB.

Its scary to see how much Waqar is earning as a coach for a team ranked so low. What is he actually doing to be earning 16k? I think he earns more than the whole playing x1 put together. Need to get rid of him fast. Its just disgusting for such a poor cricket board.

Agree with Javed Miandad, Waqar should have been removed years ago. He was a great fast bowler, a captain who destroyed Pakistan team and now as a coach, he is victimising youngsters
The entire PCB require an overhaul..! we are all sick of seeing the same old faces destroying Pakistan cricket.
What Intakhab Alam and Sher Yar have contributed to Pakistan cricket...?

@Shahid : agreed with you 2 WC 2011, 2015 lost with Waqar as coach for US$16K, save this money hire Pak national, local coach whose interest in Pakistan not foreign country. pay only $4000, he will bring result. Yes of course Waqar must Go for ever never given him chance, until he clear Justice Quyum report. Azhar ali should booked for inquiry of 3 run out and poor his personal and team performance, he should appeared of Amir Sohail/Javed/Sarfarz to find any invovement.

Watching the on-field performance of 'team', in particular the last ODI, it is clear that there is dangerously low level of communication between members of this 'team'. To me this points to a much bigger problem and that must be managed without delay. I wonder who were the 'experts' to appoint Azhar Ali as team captain.

Agree 100%
Pakistan is 8th ranked in ODI. Its a wider issue than just Ahmed Shahzad. Both Javed and Sarfraz should be more careful and sensitive when making public comments, and comment on the overall strategy rather than making comments just like any other common man. After all, they are our super heroes.

Waqar should be retained for the series against England next year as his familiarity with English conditions could be helpful for the team. He should, however, be asked to go if he fails to deliver even then. As for Azhar, he is not ODI material. He may have impressed against the less potent Bangladeshi and Zimbabwean bowling but his shortcomings have come to the fore against the stronger England attack. I also think it's too early to load Sarfraz with the ODI captaincy. He could take over the T20 from Afridi and his performance can be gauged from there. Meanwhile, based on current form and experience, I think Hafeez should be the next ODI captain.

Spot on.. Waqar is not coach material. His comments were always negative, even if the team was playing well. Now he has stopped commenting... just goes to show he does not want criticism. PCB needs to understand that good cricket players do not have good coaches. Sometimes the opposite is the true.

with one defeat there is no difference. the opponents are also an international team who defeated Aus recently. both are like anchor persons of tv.

Once again blame game started...why our retired senior players start blaming the team coach, captain, manager and so on soon after when team lose a game. We had the same coach (Waqar) when our team won the test series against England and also when we won the first one day. Why these exes didn't come out and commended Waqar for his coaching abilities. We all know that Pakistan team is known as un-expected team...one day they can score 350+ runs in ODI and the other day they can be all out under 100 runs and this has been the situation even when Senior players like Miandad and Safraz played. I hope our team will bounce back and will equalize the series so that something positive news comes from Pak team camp.

Ahmed Shehzad ODI ave is only 34.81 in 72 matches, which par below for an opener.
i don't get it why they are not calling Fawad Alam whose ave is 40.25 in 38 ODI , such a waste of talent

Waqar is a prime example of why foreign coaches work best for Pakistan.
The only good local coach was Mohsin Khan and because of he was good he was removed.

Waqar Younus was selected as coach by Najm Sethi under dubious circumstances. Other candidates were never interviewed. Waqar has brought the team from being # 4 to # 9. He has extreme likes and dislikes.

When Pak wins it's due to great Team effort . When Pak looses then it's due to suboptimal effort , poor planning and tactical errors NOT due to match/spot FIXING . Agree that Waqar has to go but still feel that Azhar Ali is the best choice at present for the captainship , since he can potentially gel the team better .

The natural choice for ODI &T20's captain was Sarfaraz Ahmed but he was person non grata for WY. The player who was not considered worth for the recently concluded world cup was appointed captain by WY & Misbah while they were in Australia !. It looks WY is not only the coach but at the same time chief selector .We need to send him packing on war footing to save our cricket.

@iqbal None is available in the market to open the innings and options available are to import openers & give them nationality to play for Pakistan OR remove all from PCB officials who matters and appoint new ones with vision & know how of the cricket to save our cricket

For the comical running between the wickets, the way they are getting out, no planning in batting order or bowling strategy, players having to guess which position they are going to bat from 1 to 6 forget 7 onwards because we have a big tail...forget the results but the ODI rankings do not lie. Someones head should be on the chopping block and it's got to be the coach and the captain. I am not surprised Younis left after the first match to retire from ODI's on this showing.

Both Miandad and Sarfraz Nawaz are third class critics on TV who only advocate for themselves only.Put Miandad in Waqar place and he will bring Faisal Iqbal in the team whether test or ODI or even T-20.Such is the sincerity of these so called experts who can not speak in their own language not to speak about English.
