LAYYAH: Two motorcyclists deprived a pharmaceutical company cashier of Rs4 million on Chobara Road on Monday.

Medicine company cashier Abdullah, accompanied by Allied Bank Manager Muhammad Saeed, was carrying Rs4 million to deposit the amount with the bank when two motorcyclists stopped their car by bursting the front tyre with a gunshot. They snatched cash bag from the cashier and sped away.

On being informed, the police sealed all the entry and exit points of the city.

On Tuesday, the Drug and Chemist Association members closed all the medical stores in the city and staged a demonstration at TDA Chowk to protest against the police failure to apprehend the gang which, they said, had been committing such robberies using a black motorcycle for quite some time.

The Saddar DSP held talks with the protesters and assured the traders of early arrest of the gangsters after which they dispersed.

Zafar Iqbal, who owns the medicine company, told Dawn the cashier was going to deposit the amount with the bank on Monday. He said the pharmacists had protested the robbery and demanded transfer of city SHO Waseem Ahmad Leghari and the Layyah district police officer.

Meanwhile, Anjuman-i-Tajran President Wahid Bakhsh said there would be a shutter-down strike on Wednesday (today) to show solidarity with the association of chemists. He also endorsed the demand for the transfer of senior police officers.
