KASUR: Police claim a woman has turned out to be the killer of her prayer leader husband shot dead on Thursday in Khara village.

This was claimed by District Police Officer (DPO) Ali Nasir Rizvi in a press conference at his office on Friday.

The DPO said it was a high-profile incident as the killing of a prayer leader, who was also a member of the district peace committee, during Muharram could spark sectarianism. He also said he had constituted seven teams to probe the killing of Qari Fazal Husain who was shot dead in his house adjacent to a mosque under mysterious circumstances. Initially, police received information that two unidentified suspects had shot him dead and escaped, the DPO added.

Rizvi further said police suspected Saamia Bibi, the wife of Husain, when the teams gathered facts and seized the murder weapon from the victim’s house.

On Friday, police arrested Saamia who, according to police, had confessed to killing her husband while he was asleep over differences between them.

A police official requesting anonymity claimed Saamia had told police her husband had been treating her “inhumanly” for 10 years and also banned her from visiting her parents. She said she had been planning to get rid of her husband for long, the police official said.

Saamia also told police during interrogation that Husain had taught her how to shoot with a pistol for self-defence as he was mostly not home at night.

The DPO said local police traced the blind murder within 12 hours, arrested the suspect and recovered the weapon.

MOTORCYCLES: Over 1,000 motorcycles were impounded in the district for not having registration numbers while scores of motorcycle owners using them put behind bars during a crackdown on Friday.

DPO Ali Nasir Rizvi said people had been informed through the media that unregistered motorcycles would not be allowed due to security reasons. He said violators had been booked and no one would be spared.

He also claimed foolproof security arrangements had been made in the district to avert any untoward incident on Youm-i-Ashur.
