GILGIT: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) central leadership on Tuesday lamented ‘non-implementation’ of the National Action Plan in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Speaking at a press conference in the Gilgit Press Club PPP central leader Qamar Zaman Kaira, said GB was a sensitive region in terms of sectarian strife, but unfortunately the National Action Plan was not being implemented in the region. PPP leader Nadeem Afzal Chun, local leaders Wazir Baig, Amjad Hussain advocate, Jamil Ahmed, and Sadia Danish were also present on the occasion.

Mr Kaira demanded that a local man be appointed as GB governor immediately. “An outsider as governor is not acceptable for GB, and the federal government should treat GB on equal terms,” he demanded.

He said the PPP was struggling to provide constitutional rights to the people of the region. Mr Kaira said the previous PPP government gave Empowerment and Self Governance Order 2009, and provisional status to the people of GB.

The PPP central leader said a Senate committee headed by Chairman Raza Rabbani was working on framing recommendations to give GB people their constitutional rights.

Replying a question he said efforts were underway to reorganise the party in GB.

BOOSTING TRADE: Federal Minister for Commerce Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan announced on Tuesday that the federal government was trying to open new links with the neighbouring countries to boost trade.

He said the government was making all out efforts to open land routes with Tajikistan and India to generate economic activities.

Addressing a ceremony in Gilgit on Tuesday he said China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) would bring development and prosperity to the country.
