LAHORE: Jamaat-i-Islami Emir Sirajul Haq says remarks of a Supreme Court senior judge about interest have sent a wave of serious concern among the masses.

Addressing participants in the JI central workshop at Mansoora on Sunday, he said the Constitution accepted the Quran and the Sunnah as the supreme law while the Holy Quran has categorically termed interest as war against Allah and His Prophet (PBUH). As such the court’s remarks had hurt the sentiments of the people.

Referring to the by-election in NA-122, he said it had been proved beyond doubt that the Election Commission of Pakistan had failed to enforce its code of conduct. He said elections had become a game of the wealthy and commoners could not even dream of contesting elections.

Mr Haq said the confidence of the masses in the electoral system had been shaken as was evident from the low turnout in the by-election. He said the ECP had failed to implement the recommendations of the Judicial Commission and Reforms Committee of the Parliament.

He said the real issue facing the country was a lack of leadership as the elite currently in power wanted to maintain the status quo and keep the masses as slaves.

The JI chief said there was no democracy within the ranks of most of the political parties and claimed that the Jamaat was the only party that had true democratic set-up.
