GUJRAT: The district sports department has sought the cost of the damage from the president of Gujrat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GTCCI) for wreaking a havoc on the wooden floor of the newly built gymnasium at the Government Zamindar College.

District Sports Officer Nadeem Butt following the directions of the higher authorities on Wednesday sent a formal notice to GTCCI President Mian Muhammad Ijaz to pay the sports department at least Rs0.5 million for the repair and polish work of the wooden floor.

The chamber had held its annual general meeting in the gymnasium on Sept 22 where Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal was the chief guest.

The payment notice to the GTCCI was also carrying the technical grounds raised by the buildings department as well as the annoyance of the local sportsmen, media and other segments of society for allowing such an activity at the gymnasium.

It was learnt that Gujrat DCO Liaqat Ali Chatha, who was on leave for performing Haj at the time of chamber’s AGM, also expressed his concern with the officials of the district government for allowing such a function at the gymnasium.

It merits mentioning that political pressure of the ruling PML N leadership had compelled the local authorities to allow the GTCCI hold its AGM at the gym.
