RAWALPINDI: The Indian attack on Pakistani posts in the hills north of Chhamb has been halted by our troops, it was officially stated tonight [Oct 2]. There was no significant activity in the area today. Concentration of India troops is still there and our troops are ready to meet any further move by the Indians.

At the UN Pakistan has told the United Nations Secretary-General, U Thant, that Indian forces yesterday launched an attack on Pakistani forces in the Chhamb sector of Kashmir. The charge was contained in a letter delivered last night to U Thant by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Syed Amjad Ali.

The letter said heavy fighting was continuing and added that UN observers in the sub-continent had been informed of the action. The Pakistan Representative requested U Thant to circulate the letter as a Security Council document. The Pakistan Press office here said the Indians attacked in brigade strength, supported by divisional artillery. — Agencies

The decision to cancel the celebrations which were scheduled to be held between October 18 and 24, was taken at a meeting convened yesterday morning by the UN Information Centre in Karachi to finalise the programme. About 20 non-governmental organisations represented at the organising committee unanimously decided that the celebrations be cancelled.
