LAHORE: Lawyers protesting in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday called for the immediate suspension of the license of rights activist and former Supreme Court Bar Association President Asma Jahangir for representing the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in a case relating to a media blackout against party chief Altaf Hussain.
The protests organised by Advocate Aftab Virk and others alleged that the MQM was involved in the murders of lawyers during the 2007 movement for the restoration of judiciary.
The protesters called for the cancellation of Jahangir's membership of the Pakistan Bar Council and other legal bodies.

Earlier this month, the LHC ordered the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and the Press Council of Pakistan (PCP) to ensure a complete blackout of all activities of the MQM supremo in both electronic and print media.
The ruling was made after a hearing of three petitions seeking a ban on media coverage of Altaf following his alleged remarks against state institutions, including the army and Rangers.
The court observed that there was sufficient material on record to order a complete blackout of the activities of Altaf Hussain, including what it called his hate speech, news regarding his activities as well as display of his picture across electronic media.
The petitions had been filed by Advocate Aftab Virk, Abdullah Malik and others.

I still remember that on 13th October 1999 Asma was the only person who had denounced Musharaf coup (even though she openly criticised Nawaz regime of that time). I may not have a high opinion of Altaaf Hussein but the law is meant to be just, justice must serve all of society. We know how it works in Pakistan, these same protesting lawyers are hardly going to be sweet innocent people either, never having taken a bribe.
Everyone has a right to representation. This is commonly in accepted in all civilised societies. These lawyers are trying to drag Pakistan back to the dark ages. Everyone has a right to representation, the question is what controversy has led to the media blackout? Burying the truth with fake protests will not help. The truth will and must come out.

We people must have patience and should develop maturity toward freedom. Asma Jehangir is a veteran lawyer and she is vocal professional lawyer. If she is fighting a case for Altaf Hussain then what is big deal. She is a lawyer and she is working on behalf of her client and trying to defend him. I think we need to change out attitude.

I think a petition is also filed against Mr. Virk and his colleagues who supported or signed the petition for obstructing justice.
The law gives the right to every person, innocent or otherwise, to a fair representation. If someone tries to effect that, in whatever way, is legally creating an obstruction towards the basic human right of the other party.
I wonder on whose behest Mr. Virk came forward or he saw an opportunity for a 15 minute fame on national television.

The LHC judgement seems a bit hasty and should be challenged, the right to free speech is a fundamental right. This smacks of censorship.
MQM /AH have a right to representation. Asma Jehangir is a courageous and principled lawyer and the demand of Mr. Virk is so outrageous, particularly coming from a lawyer - perhaps his licence needs to be reviewed!

So now we see the Real face of these Lawyers, they didn't protest when the people of Karachi were killed on daily basis, they didn't protest when MQM members were extrajudicially killed by LEAs in fake encounters and their tortured bodies were found from different areas of Karachi, when Police indiscriminately fired on the Protesters in Pakko Qilo,

If Asma is representing the MQM she is not doing any crime, she can represent any party she wish to, if her argument is right ban on Altaf speech should be lifted if she fails to argue then the court will impose ban on Mr Hussain's speeches it is court to decide not the lawyers.

whats wrong with every one ? By law every one have a right to defend his case. Strange people are going mad against Hate speech but no one cares about the deaths of thousand + children in Thar and still dying due to Qaim Ali shah negligence in Sind province. No body want to raise voice against him , no bill was passed in parliament against him and no media coverage on that matter.

Asma Jahangir is a lawyer and an Human Rights Aactivist, she is bold and she stands for Human Rights and for the freedom of speach and expression. Ignorant people critical of Asma Jahangir are either are unaware of the basics of democracy and human rights or they are simply displaying their hatred against certain people and society.

@Shakil Ahmed Khan : Though it is their livelihood but still honest and dignified lawyers in good old days did not take up all cases just for the sake of money - they used to take only genuine cases where they felt that the grievances really deserve to be removed.

I am not a fan of Asma Jehangir.
She DOES have a right to defend any one she likes. She is under oath to defend any one she wants to no matter how unpopular that person might be.
Lawyers and doctors in Pakistan are a crazy lot and will not survive in any other society with their present habits and attitudes towards the common man. They do not seem to respect law of land.

It makes me laugh when I hear Pakistani leaders condemning Europe for not accepting refugees from Middle East. It appears that people of all four provinces hate each other and most of all Urdu speaking are still being rejected after 68 years in Pakistan, Bihari are rotting in Bangla Desh , so much caring for refugees.
Asma Jahangir who is a bold lawyer and a human right activist has courage to stand up for freedom of speech and expression, I wonder why so many Pakistani are critical of Asma Jhangir who is simply doing her job.

What a shame…A person guilty or innocent has the right to defend himself/herself under law. Similarly a lawyer is obligated to defend guilty/innocent. Asma is a great lawyer of international repute, if she is barred, which I doubt, will arbitrate internationally, this will be Pakistan’s great loss.

I am not a fan of Asma Jehangir but I do respect her as honest and ethical lawyer. The demand of lawyers is wrong and unethical. Every criminal has the right to defend himself in the court of law and every lawyer has an obligation to represent his client as a defence lawyer. Political affiliation should not play any role in this matter. It is aginst the principle of equal justice for all.

Without taking any political sides whatsoever, I find it extremely bizarre that lawyers themselves are asking for one of their own to be suspended because she is representing 'her client'.
Surely, yes SURELY a lawyer has a right to work on whoever's behalf she wants to.
Even people that are eventually found guilty of murder have a lawyer representing them.
Next, you'll probably get doctors asking for surgeons that are treating an accused in a criminal case to be suspended.
We seem to be heading towards mob rule, not towards democracy.
