KARACHI, Oct 15: The National Accountability Bureau has asked Karachi University to furnish it with all records of KU’s finance department and details of awarding contract for hiring consultants to construct three department buildings.

In a letter sent to the KU vice-chancellor on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the Deputy Director General NAB Sindh, Lt. Col. (retd) Tahir Javaid, the bureau directed the varsity to provide details of awarding Rs600 million contract for construction of three department buildings and demanded the records of embezzlements in its probe against KU’s former director finance.

It may be mentioned here that the governor had ordered the suspension of KU director finance, Younus Ahmed Khan, on charges of incompetence and financial embezzlement last month. He had directed the KU administration to advertize the post for hiring a competent person to look into financial affairs.

The letter stated, “The vice-chancellor is directed under Section-19 of the NAB Ordinance 1999 to furnish details of the financial embezzlement along with records of contract for hiring consultants to construct department buildings.”

It may be recalled here that the governor, who is also the university chancellor, had ordered the KU administration to initiate a detailed internal inquiry against former dean of Science Faculty, Dr Altaf Ali Khan, issuance of charge sheet and lodging of FIR against the former director finance, Younus Ahmed Khan. —PPI
