SAHIWAL: A woman attempted suicide after strangling her two minor daughters in Ghalla Mandi (grain market) locality here on Sunday.

According to locals, the suspect, Parveen, got married to Asif some six years ago and the couple had two daughters -- Mahnoor (3) and Maimoona (4).

Asif ran a makeshift breakfast stall in Lahore, while parveen lived with her in-laws.

Some neighbours told Dawn that Parveen would have frequent quarrels with her husband as well as her in-laws over financial matters.

On Sunday morning, when Parveen did not come out of her upper-storey room, her in-laws went upstairs and found her lying unconscious in her bed with her wrists slit and bleeding. Her daughters were also lying besides her motionless.

Rescue 1122 personnel who were informed of the incident reached the spot and declared the two minor girls dead.

Parveen was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital where doctors revived her after three hours.

Ghalla Mandi police on being informed of the incident took Parveen into custody. In her statement to the police, she confessed to having strangled her daughters “to relieve them of all the troubles.”

Police say neither Parveen’s husband nor her in-laws want to register an FIR of the crime.

Shahid Iqbal, a relative of Parveen’s husband told police the family was not interested in the postmortem of the girls’ bodies.

No FIR was entered till filling of this report.

One of Parveen’s brothers told the media his sister had never shown any signs of mental illness.
