KARACHI: Two policemen were arrested on Sunday for keeping a young student in illegal confinement and later releasing him after taking a bribe.

SSP-City Fida Hussain Janwari said that five policemen of the Kharadar police station had detained Sohail Hussain, who is studying in the United Kingdom, in Pan Mandi on Saturday night.

He said that they brought him to the Kharadar police station, subjected him to torture and kept him in illegally detention. Later, the policemen released him after taking Rs35,000 in bribe, the SSP added.

Taking notice of the incident, police authorities ordered SP-City Zeeshan Siddiqui to conduct an inquiry. The probe confirmed the charges against the policemen, the SSP said. The police detained two constables, while three of their accomplices were at large.

They were booked under Section 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The SSP said that the victim was a student and had come to Pakistan on vacation to meet his family.

The held policemen, however, alleged that they detained the student as he misbehaved with them.

Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal took notice of the incident and ordered Karachi police chief Mushtaq Mahar to submit a report on the incident to him.
