ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday arrived in Mianwali's district of Isakhel and announced Rs1.3 billion to safeguard the district from floods caused by hill torrents in the future.

Addressing flood victims in Isakhel, the premier expressed grief over the loss of life and promised necessary action to prevent floods caused by hill torrents.

PM Nawaz also announced Rs200 million for a water scheme in Isakhel.

The premier shed light on the importance of building more dams in order to avoid devastation caused by floods. He reassured the people that the government is prioritising development of underdeveloped areas in order to bring them at par with developed areas.

PM Nawaz also mentioned the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, saying that it will pass through the area and create employment opportunities for the people and bring prosperity.

The premier added that Pakistan's economy is showing positive trends and in the next three years it will be further strengthened.

Upon his arrival in Mianwali, PM Nawaz was briefed on the flood situation by Mianwali District Coordination Officer (DCO) Talat Mehmood Gondal and reviewed flood affected areas.

The DCO informed PM Nawaz that 45 villages and around 55,000 people were affected by heavy rain and hill torrents. He further said that crops on 12,924 acres of land were destroyed by the floods. Moreover, 11 relief camps were set up for flood affectees and 2,345 people were transferred to safer areas.

The DCO added that 2,214 tents and 9,800 food packets were also distributed amongst the flood victims.

Earlier this week, hill torrents devastated Isakhel tehsil owing to torrential rains on surrounding mountains.

High flood in River Kurram had eroded a portion of Mianwali-Bannu Road at Jalalpur near Kalabagh. Various hill torrents of Isakhel tehsil locally known as ‘Barooch’, ‘Rakka’ and ‘Lunda’ destroyed crops on thousands of acre land besides inundating residential localities of various mauzas.

The district officials said three men and a child were killed in collapse of houses in different parts of Isakhel tehsil on Monday.

Reports said water flowed into the Isakhel Tehsil Headquarters Hospital and its residential area forcing the hospital staff and indoor patients to shift to nearby girls college building.

The four-foot deep water damaged hospital medicines and other equipment. Doctors had to temporarily set up outdoor department at the college building while the hospital authorities fetched medicines from a local medical store for patients.

The hill torrent of Barooch has inundated basic health unit (BHU) at Kaloor Town in Isakhel and hospital staff shifted to some higher ground. The constant downpour since Saturday had also disrupted power supply, rendering pumping stations inoperative and causing shortage of drinking water in Isakhel tehsil.

An earlier reported figure of Rs300 million has been revised to Rs1.3 billion after a press release from PM House.
