CHITRAL: MNA Shahzada Iftikharuddin has demanded of prime minister and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister to take concrete measures to allay the sufferings of people in flood-affected area of Chitral.

He told Dawn here on Sunday that flood-hit areas in Chitral were faced with shortage of flour and other food items. He said that steel bridges should be built in Muzgol, Kosht, Oveer, Loanin Mulkhow besides Shogore (Karimabad) and Arkari valleys so that food items particularly flour could be supplied here as flour mills were not functional there.

“I fear the situation will get out of control if the steel bridges are not arranged. The steel bridges will help people to depend on private sector and market forces instead of depending on the government,” the MNA said and appealed to the government to take concrete measures to cope with the crisis.

He also appealed to the provincial government to take practical steps for restoration of Reshun hydro power station.

Meanwhile, Al-Khidmat Foundation dispatched relief goods to the flood-hit Kalash valleys of Bumburate and Rumbur on the backs of 54 mules and donkeys via the hilly track as the road was washed away by flash flood two days ago.

Talking to Dawn here on Sunday, the district head of Al-Khidmat Foundation, Maghfirat Shah said that 100 volunteers were accompanying the animals to carry out relief operation in the valleys, which remained inaccessible after being devastated by the flash flood.

He said that residents of the twin valleys were in dire need of help as they lost everything after they were rendered homeless by the flood and no government or non-government organisation approached them due to blockade of road.
