Hurriyat rejects Pakistan High Commission's invitation for Eid Milan

NEW DELHI: Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani in a surprise move has decided against attending an Eid Milan which is to be hosted by the Pakistan High Commission on July 21.

According to ZeeNews , Geelani rejected the invitation on the grounds that the Kashmir issue was "ignored" in the joint statement between India and Pakistan after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Indian premier Modi held their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Ufa, Russia on July 10.

The Times of India reported that the Hurriyat Conference leader, while speaking to IANS news agency said that he will register his protest by not attending the Eid Milan because the two leaders did not discuss Kashmir during their meeting in Ufa.

"As the two prime ministers ignored the fate of over 10 million people of Jammu and Kashmir in their meeting, we reject being a part of any of their [Pakistan's] celebration," Geelani told IANS over the phone from Srinagar.

"The Kashmir issue is question of life and death for us. Nobody can take us for granted. And I will not attend the Eid Milan in New Delhi to register a symbolic protest," he said.

Opposition parties in Pakistan expressed reservations after the Modi-Nawaz meeting, with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) taking the lead to highlight that Kashmir was ignored.

Shireen Mazari expressed dismay at what she said was silence on the Kashmir issue and Indian involvement in Balochistan. “Modi raised Mumbai and Sharif agreed to ‘fast track’ the investigations. Not a word on Samjhota Express was uttered by PM Sharif,” she said earlier.

Last year, India had called off foreign secretary-level bilateral talks with Pakistan following criticism of Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit meeting with Hurriyat leader Shabir Shah.

Pakistan had termed India's decision to call off foreign secretary level talks a setback to efforts by the Pakistani leadership to promote "good, neighbourly relations" with India.

Pakistan had also rejected India's reservation to Pakistani envoys meeting with Kashmiri leaders, as such meetings with Kashmiri leaders are held to facilitate meaningful discussions on the issue of Kashmir.

For future prospect, nawaz sarif did a good job, if we think wisely, after 4 war what both side achieved?? Nothing, but only huge spending on military. No any government is going to give even a inch of area without conflict and winning the deadly nuclear war. In this scenario best solution is status quo and talk about trade. Mr geelani started this movement without proper vision and no change in the policy ,first before partition we have a poverty ridden huge population where food shelter health education trade etc is scares and with empty coffers in the treasury. immediately after the independence first could have addressed to these issues , e, but in six decades, could have developed Kashmir as heaven on earth for tourism instead wasted time energy money and impart-ant the precious lives so this sudden change in stance does not help at least now he should start working for betterment of kashmir youths on either side and guide them for growth and development instead of encouraging to pelt ing stone at security forces, remember all these western countries , USA ,RUSSIA, japan china allso went to war in 19th century but quickly they reconciled they focused only on economic growth technology etc

Consistent bickering doesn't in anyway help the Kashmiris. Two whole generations of Kashmiris have lost great opportunities for better education health and happy living. This constant feeling of real or imaginary deprivation by muslims needs careful study. The terrible turmoil in most of Muslim countries is very unfortunate. Syria or Egypt or Iran or Iraq or Afghanistan a painful thread of pain and suffering should come to a decent and wuick closure.

What about your other ethnicities like Buddhists from Ladakh and Leh and hundred thousands hindus that were also part of valley and Jammu as whole ? Does this Gilani represent every single person in Valley. Ask your heart. Are you making this Kashmir issue as two religion theory or freedom movement for valley people. IF this is a freedom movement then it should also include all religion living in Jammu and Kashmir.

India is not only a regional heavyweight in terms of technology, military, and economy, like China, it is also a global superpower. Country's issues are normally solved by dedicated ,commited ,caring , Leaders, unfortunately Pakistan lacks that. So far we have not produced Leaders who really care about the country and its people ! We dont have a system to produce them. we dont have institutions teaching democracy to people ,we dont elect any body,thats how our democracy has been set up by our leaders so that they can revolve the regimes one after the other and enrich their households. Do we elect city councilors ? city mayors ? Governors ? Any body ? Plus our education system is all corrupt and broken, distributing fake degrees, and then those fake degree holders running the governments! Even Afghanistan is getting concerned and dedicated leadership now and will surpass Pakistan in every thing in one generation just like our other neighbors ! Because I believe India will never leave Kashmir and we don't have enough world with us so that we can force India. Also for India , Kashmir is just a tiny part of their economy. The arms race and mistrust and enmity between India and Pakistan is due to so called unresolved dispute created by Kashmiri leaders and these leaders are playing double game between India and Pakistan. The failure of Aman Ki Asha between India and Pakistan is due to Kashmir leaders. @I4ni And who told you to give up Pakistan's interests when it comes to Kashmir? Pakistan's interests lie in Kashmir you do realise that. India has started building dams on the eastern Indus rivers in direct contravention of the Indus Water treaty. Conservative estimates have put the Neelam Valley project losses due to Kishen Ganga project at minimum 10 percent. We Kashmiris are very sentimental about Pakistan. Atleast you could do something in return of that sentiment.

Nawaz Sharif as Prime Minister of Pakistan is not commanding respect from either India nor certain Kashmiri leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani. It's even more insulting when Nawaz being of Kashmiri background has distanced himself from broaching Kashmir's human rights violations by India for over three decades and manipulating Kashmiri votes in India's favor. If former President Musharraf was representing Pakistan at this Summit, he would never tolerate Modi's arrogance nor ignore policies re Kashmir which could undermine Pakistan's national interest.

This is definitely an eye opener for everyone involved and I appreciate Nawaz thinking Pakistan is not just Kashmir and makes no sense to continue the same drumbeat. It is very intelligent decision and makes business sense than anything else. When India is growing economically, why not take advantage to improve lives in Pakistan and there is already lot of 'operations' going on elsewhere in Pakistan itself. Love Peace

Pakistan always has and it continues to support the legitimate right of the People of Kashmir to self determination because it is the correct thing to do but has no obligation to do so. Kashmir leaders should stop blackmailing Pakistan and appreciate whatever Pakistan has done for their cause at the expense of its own socio-economic development and security

@I4ni .......myself being from a kashmiri background,am first pakistani .The other day an article in DAWN talked about how these kashmiri leaders make money from both India and Pakistan.I do not see what is the hulla baloo if NS met Modi as being a pakistani first and not as a Kashmiri. NS is the leader of pakistan and not Kashmir.The Kashmir issue can be handled any other day or time as has been done for many years.We do not have to go to war or argue over a state which is divided between themselves whether they want to remain with India,or join Azad Kashmir or become self independant.

@Varun Kashmir issue including issues surrounding Muslims and Christians and Sikhs in Indian are kept alive by Indian politicians and Army. Politicians are using minorities as a tool to win elections (Ayodhya, Godhra, Golden Star etc.) and Army and defense forces are getting 20% extra remunerations and other facilities when they work in disturbed area like J&K and Assam and formerly Punjab.
