MARDAN: Michael Indaryas of Awami National Party was declared winner on a reserved seat in the Mardan Cantonment Board elections held here on Friday.

According to the election commission officials here, three candidates, including Michael Indaryas of ANP and two independents Jan Majeed and Rashid Maseeh, contested the election to the seat reserved for minorities.

Earlier, Dr Tariq Khan of ANP and independent candidate Anwar Ali had won the elections on two seats of the board.

According to the election rules, these two winning candidates were authorised to vote for any of the three candidates contesting elections for the reserved seat.

However, an interesting situation emerged when two of the three contenders Mr Indaryas and Mr Rashid got one vote each.

Later, with consultations of the two candidates, the board’s executive officer, who was also the returning officer, decided the matter on toss.

The coin turned in favour of ANP candidate Indaryas and he was declared winner in the elections on the reserved seat.

On completion of the election on both the general and reserved seats, Dr Tariq Khan was chosen as chairman of the Mardan Cantonment Board.
