ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif on Monday for “consultations” on security challenges.

“Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif met Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif at the PM House,” the PM Office said in a brief statement.

No details of the meetings were given by either side except for the prime minister’s office saying: “Matters relating to internal and external security of the country came under discussion.”

One of Mr Sharif’s advisers said the two met for “consultations on important issues”, but refused to say which issues were discussed.

The meeting took place ahead of the federal cabinet meeting slated for Tuesday for discussing the budgetary proposals for fiscal year 2015-16. The military is reportedly seeking higher increase in defence spending.

PM Sharif and Gen Sharif, while discussing the internal security situation, according to a source, also spoke about Indian defence minister’s statement that India would use terrorism to counter terrorism from other countries.
