No need to panic just yet: Shahryar Khan

KARACHI: Pakistan's cricket chief said he was “deeply disappointed” Thursday after the national team was whitewashed 3-0 by Bangladesh in the one-day series -- their worst-ever defeat against the lowly ranked side.

Fast-rising Bangladesh exposed a new look Pakistan team under a new captain Azhar Ali in all three matches played in Dhaka, winning by margins of 79 runs, seven and eight wickets.

It was Pakistan's fifth one-day series loss in the last 12 months, prompting calls to sack coach Waqar Younis and bring back opener Ahmed Shahzad and middle-order batsman Umar Akmal who were dropped for the tour over disciplinary issues.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan promised a review of the defeat.

“We shall not be pressing any panic buttons but will wait for the tour's end before engaging in a thorough review of all factors.

“Like all cricket fans in Pakistan, I am deeply disappointed at the one-day international whitewash in Bangladesh,” Khan was quoted as saying in a PCB release.

Khan praised Bangladesh, who shocked higher ranked England to qualify for the quarter-final of the World Cup last month.

“We are playing a highly proficient Bangladesh team that has improved by leaps and bounds over the past few years. Yet such a display was unanticipated. Pakistan team will take time to gel together.”

Khan said despite the defeats there were some positives.

“Despite the losses, there have been some encouraging performances, notably by captain Azhar Ali, who has led by example, Mohammad Rizwan, Saad Nasim and Sami Aslam,” said Khan.

But he added: “We need specially to evaluate fitness and fielding issues and also the mental strength of our boys, which was found wanting.”

With their 3-0 defeat Pakistan slumped to eighth in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings -- their worst since the system was introduced in 2003.

“We remain high on the ICC's Test and Twenty20 ladders but need to improve our one-day ratings. I am sure given time this young team will show results.”

Pakistan are placed fourth in Tests and third in Twenty20. They play a one-off Twenty20 on Friday before taking on Bangladesh in a two-Test series.

It is not wise to bringing back Akmal and Shahzad if they are not following the discipline, however, the biggest mistake committed by the selection committee is to sit out Younus Khan, who could have guided the young team. It is beyond understanding, how the team selection is taking place, sacking coach is not a bad idea too.

The answer to the puzzle is very simple. Most Cricket players in South Asia are not athletes. They are Cricket players. None of them know how hard athletes work. Sri Lanka prevailed on raw physical talent alone. Cricket is a game of skill. Skills can be learned, but natural talent cannot be taught. The rest of us must work twice as hard and sweat twice as long and practice two hours more on the pitch. Raw talent and a do or die will to conquer does not exist among upper class individuals. They are not hungry enough to dominate the game.

Players need to be superfit, educated and mentally strong - there is no nerve and sinew in the current team barring Azhar, Harris, Rizwan, Irfan and Wahab. Get Shan Masood back in the team. You also botched up captaincy issue - please rectify immediately and make Wahab captain and either Harris or Azhar his vice!

What a ridiculous statement - I'm 100% sure that Pakistan B team or any departmental team (selected on merit) can beat BD easily. It's all this due nepotism and lack of merit, not only in players selection but in all departments of PCB - starting from TOP to BOTTOM.

No need to panick, he says!! One defeat can be explained away, second one must ring alarm bells, the third one definitely makes one panick!! We got white-washed by BD, for God's sake! Show some spine, Khan Saheb, and resign! And please take the coach with you. As long as the PCB management is run by sifarshee's, we cannot hope for a turn-around. The way the domestic cricket is run, this state of affair was expected. Right now, the Pakistan 'team' is just a bunch of raw but talented players. The management miserably failed to turn them into a fighting team.

Pakistan has lost to district teams in NewZealand and then a an A-team in Bangladesh leave alone a white wash by the national team of minnow BD. I am so sure that they could even lose to Nepal and Afghanistan too. Najam Sethi, Shaharyar and Waqar should resign and let this not die like hocky and squash. It's time for some thinking and stopping the corruption in selection process. Waqar's ego needs to be taken care of too.

Look how they find excuses. Because BD defeated a weak England team so the 3-0 is being justified. He forgets that Pakistan has not won a series since 2013 and we have lost all 3 side matches too in NZ and BD. No team can win today if they can't score 300 and Pakistan is no where near to this ability. Get rid of Hafeez, Fawad, Saad Nasim and Asad Shafiq and start trying some stroke players. Even Haris is no OD player but you can live with a single one of this mode but no more. Bring back Shehzad, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik and Maqsood.

Dropping Shehzad and Umar Akmal was a very bad decision. Sohaib Maqsood was unfortunately injured. Whilst I have always supported Fawad Alam he was disappointing. Saad Naseem and M Rizwan aren't ready for international cricket. Hafeez needs to bat at 7 as an all rounder otherwise he has no place in the team either. Either find a suitable replacements for Shahzad and U Akmal or put your differences aside and bring them back. Shehzad, Sami, Azhar, Harris, U Akmal/ Maqsood, Sarfraz, Hafeez, Y Shah, Wahab, Junaid, Irfan. Fawad, Jamshed, Rizwan, Saad, Babar Azam, Ajmal, Rahat, Sohail K, Anwar Ali etc should be in Pak A in case a replacement is required for out of form and injured players.

Non-cricketers run the show, including Go Nawaz Go. Shaharyar Khan thinks 8th position within the top 8 cricketing nations is not a cause for concern. Waqar should be kicked out and Sarfaraz, an aggressively-inclined player must be made the captain. Azhar should continue in all forms of cricket as a batsman.

@A Thought , Can't agree with your team. Haris is not a OD player. He has sure earned his place through some type of consistancy but it is also a fact that he is not a stroke player. You will rarely see him driving or pulling with command. He would earn his runs through nudges, cuts or flicks. And that doesn't suit a limited over game. I won't play Azhar and Haris both unless Azhar is an opner instead of Sami. And, at the moment there is no other allrounder available who is better than Shoaib Malik. Shehzad, Sami Aslam, Azhar, Umar Akmal, Maqsood, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz, Wahab, Junaid (M.Amir), Irfan, Zulfiqar Baber(ajmal)

It's the same story, different series. After the first match, it was clear Pakistan didn't belong on the same pitch as Bangladesh who were the favorites. Losing is one thing but we were thoroughly beaten for the 3rd straight match.

I don't understand why Pakistani people are panicked. They need to accept Bangaldesh cricket is light years ahead of Pakistani cricket at the moment in terms of efficiency and commitment. They lost to a better team, fair and square. There is no need to sack anyone, no change needed at the moment. They just need more practice with better teams and I am sure success will follow soon. To the Pakistani fans, please take it easy. I understand it is hard to digest but this is the reality. Trust me you will feel better as soon as you accept it.

No need to panic ???????/ Has this man even been watching the team play and the performances. They have not been losing they have been getting annihilated . They are not even giving the bengalis a game and hes happy saying dont panic. I couldnt imagine the austaralians having a simmilar attitude. when you have people at the helm who are happy and accept mediocre and poor performances what results do you expect. We should have panicked after the limp performance against india in the wc and this may have been prevented but this mans still happy saying "dont panic"

He should give answer why Pakistan performed badly under his Head of Board? Actually the re is an inefficient cricket Board of Pakistan, which has created Misba Syndrome. This syndrome will produce cricket players of out of market. They players will make T20 one day, One day Match Test and Test like T2o. Pakistan will only come out of its when they will restructure PCB and change the noms of grading players by combing Average and Strike rate.

Mr Shahryar Khan. You are a reasonably intelligent and self respecting person. I therefore, implore you to do the right thing - resign immediately, and please do not return to head Pakistan cricket. Because: 1. The new team you have now is a shell of what you headed 10 years ago. And that was because you had a team of wonderfully skilled individuals. Not because of any Administration achievement mind you. 2. You do not know cricket and therefore you will not able to get this rabble to improve in the next couple of years, and by then you should have retired so will not be able to see any team building results. 3. No need to panic!!??? If no need now then I think you don't even comprehend the disaster that Misbah and the previous PCB leader/s wrought.

Please Mr Sheryar, do this nation a favor. leave Pakistan cricket alone , take away your coach with you and persuade your boss NS to stop meddling with the game and hand it over to people who have left their mark on the game and can restore it's lost glory. As for your advised about not to panic, this nation is now beyond panicking stage it is now utterly ashamed and embarrass

@A Thought I do not think that dropping Umar Akmal or Shehzad was a bad decision. They needed time to reflect on their performances and re consider their attitudes to the game. Under performers like them who have been around for years in the team do not merit more than a second chance. Those who bat must be worthy of playing a sustainable innings , those who ball must not allow the opponents to settle. Pakistan B team is for training and learning. Test team members must deliver.

well ! well !! u Pakistanis r always negative in ur thinking I'd say.This BD team can defeat any team in the planet now . Pak team tried their best but outplayed by the newborn Tigers.Bring some Pak players who are in Heavens too result will be the same, Friends !! Mr. Khan is right, sacking and bringing is not the solution support your team to settle them to play smart Cricket like Soumya, Sabbir, Taskin, Mustafizurs....

dear sir, we are all Bangladeshi think its our regular win. now Pakistan team are not so good than previous. Panic or other think its normal way. You should more practicing and manner to other team like Zimbabwe, Netherlands, and Kenya.

No need to panick, he says!! One defeat can be explained away, second one must ring alarm bells, the third one definitely makes one panick!! We got white-washed by BD, for God's sake! Show some spine, Messrs Shaharyar, Najam Sethi, Subhan Ahmed, Iqbal Qasim and Wasim Bari, and resign! And please take the coach with you. As long as the PCB management is run by sifarshee's, we cannot hope for a turn-around. The way the domestic cricket is run, this state of affair was expected. Right now, the Pakistan 'team' is just a bunch of raw but talented players. The management miserably failed to turn them into a fighting team.
