LAHORE: The alleged member of banned Hizbul Tehreer arrested in the Punjab University on Monday was a relative of PU Vice-Chancellor Mujahid Kamran, say police.

Iqbal Town Division Operations SP Mohammad Iqbal told Dawn that Qari Shehryar, who was arrested for distributing hate material and preaching the students to join his banned organisation, is nephew of Mujahid Kamran’s former wife.

He said that Shaheryar was student of a private university of Lahore. During study he would stay at the official residence of Mr Mujahid, quoting initial inquiry, the SP said.

The Punjab University spokesman, however, denied allegations of the police saying that Qari Shaheryar was neither the relative of the PU VC nor he had lived at his residence ever.

The arrested suspect was the Hizbul Tahreer chapter of Punjab president and the police had recovered from his Mustafa Town residence hate material.
