SAHIWAL, Sept 27: An under-trial accused and a two-day-old baby have died in the central jail here on Saturday.

Abdul Ghafoor of Hujra Shah Muqeem was being tried for kidnap, possessing illicit arms and four other cases. He was brought to central jail on June 15. His condition suddenly deteriorated early on Saturday morning and died before any medical help could be provided to him.

Mariam of Chak 50-D (Deepalpur) was brought to the jail on Aug 6 in a kidnap and rape case. She was pregnant. She gave birth to a baby two days ago.

The baby developed some complications and died before any medical aid could be provided to her.

Meanwhile, the Sahiwal district and session judge has ordered an inquiry into the deaths and named judicial magistrate Afzaal Butt as inquiry officer.
