RAWALPINDI: Telephone booths have been set up at Central Jail Adiala to allow prisoners to make calls to family members and lawyers once a week, under surveillance.

According to sources at the prison, Punjab Prison Inspector General Farooq Nazir formally inaugurated the telephone booths installed in Adiala Jail on Monday.

The telephone facility had already been introduced at some district jails in Punjab as part of plans to improve facilities for inmates and is now being introduced at Central Jail Adiala.

“There will be no call charges as a telephone operator will dial the number for the inmate. However, the system operator will record the call and note down its duration,” an official told Dawn.

The official said the calls are being monitored to ensure that the facility is not misused by the prisoners.

Since there are several accused terrorists at Adiala, telephone privileges would be allowed after several rounds of inquiry and security checks.
