Hamza Ali Abbasi resigns as PTI's culture secretary

KARACHI: Pakistani actor and director Hamza Ali Abbasi announced his decision to resign as Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s culture secretary through a post on his Facebook account Tuesday.
According to Hamza, he is not fit to represent PTI as its culture secretary because of a recent film he acted in.
“Even though it’s a brilliantly written and directed film, I disagree with certain elements in its execution which I regard as not in line with our culture.”

Hamza said by agreeing to act in the film, he went against what he preached and was therefore unfit to serve as Pakistan’s cultural representative in a political party.
Hamza has been actively involved with the PTI and was seen alongside Imran Khan and other PTI members on numerous occasions during the party's 126-day sit-in outside Parliament House in Islamabad.
While his Facebook post does not specify the film he is referring to, it is believed the film is 'Jawani Phir Nahi Ani', scheduled for release later this year.

This really is a tough one for me. While I feel there should be a complete separation of work and ideology, I see a gray area too that might be bothersome or disturbing. I have seen some actors (male/female) play some real nasty roles but are very decent people otherwise. So not sure where I stand on this. If my roles should be representative of what I believe in though thats all they are, roles. Or should I just play roles that portray me in the same light that I believe in...

He sounds confused! While he writes in bold that he will not do anything against his belief , yet he did the role. Anyways resigning is commendable. The man deserves credit for it.

This is twisted logic. What does his working in a film have anything to do with his PTI's culture secretary position? If the film had elements that do not represent 'our culture' , then the logical thing would have been to pull out from the film rather than resigning from the PTI position.

read his fb post. he explains very clearly y he acted in it. 2 repay a favour 2 friends who were there 4 him & supported him when he was a nobody... he remembers all those who helped on the way up instead of becoming arrogant & bigheaded. he's not happy with certain elements of the project nowhere does he say anything about his own role or character specifically. most likely he's unhappy with the way project is presented overall rather than his own role.

Makes perfect sense. He is as confused as his leader about culture, women and moral compass. A common problem with middle class Pakistani men. They do one thing and preach something else. Perfect in line with PTI ideology. He should therefore not resign. He will serve the hypocrite IK well.

@depressed : He did not practice what he preached that's why he resigned. He should not have done such a role in the first place. If he did it, he should not comment or criticize others for acting below standard.
