LAHORE: The Punjab University’s spokesman has challenged the interpretation of the PU Act 1973 by one of its law college faculty members in a news item appearing in Dawn regarding the PU Senate meeting.

The law college faculty member had raised objection with reference to the acting governor’s act of chairing the varsity senate meeting.

The spokesman said the acting governor exercised all the authority of a full-fledged office holder to perform the functions of the governor, according to the Lahore High Court’s verdict.

The spokesman said Section 23 of Punjab University Act 1973 had wrongly been interpreted by the University Law College teacher.

The spokesman clarified that the Section 11 (1) of the Punjab University Act 1973 provided that the governor of Punjab would be chancellor of the university.

“Further, Section 23 of Punjab University Act 1973 refers to the composition of senate, according to which the chancellor will act as chairman of the senate. As in the absence of governor, the Speaker of provincial assembly acts as governor therefore, by virtue of Punjab University Act, he is chancellor of the university in the absence of governor. He is not ‘acting chancellor’ in any way as wrongly interpreted by the teacher of the University Law College,” the spokesman added.
