Accident victims

Published January 28, 2015

THIS refers to the Daulatpur tragedy in which 19 schoolchildren and two of their teachers and the van driver were crushed under the wheels of Bahria Town dumper on Jan 15, 2014, between Nawabshah and Kazi Ahmed. They were returning after winning the quiz.

The children and the teachers belonged to Bright Future High School, Daulatpur. No one, including the driver of the killer dump truck, has been arrested so far; perhaps because the dumper belonged to a most wealthy and influential person.

The Sindh government announced a government job for each heir of those who died and a judicial inquiry of the tragedy. But the case has since not moved farther.

The parents of deceased children have complained that they were let down by the government. The painful aspect of the Dulatpur tragedy is that no one, except the victims’ families, has remembered those children and not a single NGO of Sindh lit candles to remember them.

Is it not apathy on the part of people, especially government and human rights and social organisations, to ignore the Daulatpur tragedy?
