‘Charles I at the Hunt’ which is titled as ‘Le Roi à la chasse’ in French (oil on canvas) 266 cm x 207 cm was painted in 1635 by the Flemish artist Anthony van Dyckc (1599 – 1641). The artist painted King Charles I of England and Scotland who is dressed as an aristocratic gentleman in civilian clothing and standing next to a horse as if resting on a hunt. The canvas is the best example of Baroque style of painting, reflecting the profound political and cultural changes that were taking place across Europe at that time. Dyckc was considered as one of the leading exponent of the Baroque painting along with Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer in Northern Europe. ‘Charles I at the Hunt’ is now displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris.—M.I.
