Sadia crowned squash champion by default

KARACHI: Third seed Sadia Gul picked up second title of her career by getting the better of top seed Zoya Khalid by default in the final of the fifth Hyderabad Commissioner Cup National Women’s Squash Championship at the Hyderabad Gymkhana courts on Sunday.

Sadia was 7-5 up in the third game after winning the first two when her opponent decided to quit owing to pain in right shoulder. The scores were 11-5, 13-11, 7-5 (retired). The final lasted just 18 minutes.

Sadia, who stunned second seed Riffat Khan in the Saturday’s semi-final, had won her maiden national title final at Southend Club last year.

Sadia received a winning purse of Rs15,000 and trophy from the chief guest, deputy commissioner Hyderabad Fayyaz Hussain Jation.

Zoya earned runner-up purse of Rs10,500 and a trophy.

A special prize was awarded to Roshail Shaikh, being the only participant from Hyderabad.

Prominent among others who were present on the occasion include additional commissioner II Hyderabad Abid Saleem Qureshi, president Sindh Squash Association Tahir Khanzada and secretary SSA Aijaz Shaikh.
