PM chairs MPC on Peshawar tragedy

PESHAWAR: The Multi-Party Conference (MPC) convened by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on a school in Peshawar which has left at least 141 people dead, went underway at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor House on Wednesday.

The meeting will discuss ways to form a strategy to stop terrorist activities and flush out all terrorists from the country. It will also review measures to beef up security for all important buildings, education institutions and to protect life and property of the people.

The meeting chaired by Premier Sharif is also being attended by Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah and all four provincial chief ministers.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, Emir Jamaat-i-Islami Sirajul Haq, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leaders Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Jehangir Khan Tareen, Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Rasheed Godil, PML leader Ejazul Haq, PPP's Aitzaz Ahsan and Raja Pervez Ashraf, JUI-F leader Maulana Ghafoor Haideri, Awami National Party chief Asfanyar Wali Khan and PML-Q leader Mushahid Hussain were also among the attendees of the meeting.

Premier Sharif on Tuesday had invited all parties represented in parliament, including the PTI, to join hands and forge a renewed commitment to fight terrorists and extremists.

Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said on Tuesday that the PM had invited heads of all parliamentary parties to show the whole world that the entire nation stood against terrorism and extremism. “The conference has been called to obtain the support of all political forces in the war against terror,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) told Dawn that Imran Khan had announced his plans to attend the MPC, along with PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak.
