UAF establishes Waris Shah Chair

FAISALABAD: The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) has set up Waris Shah Chair for research on the Punjabi classic poet.

This was stated by UAF Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan here on Monday while addressing the ongoing five-day drama festival at the university.

Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, while applauding the contribution of Waris Shah, said there was no doubt that he (Waris Shah) was the Shakespeare of Punjabi. He said the ideas presented by saints like Waris Shah, Baba Farid and Bulleh Shah could help the nation solve social problems.

Besides its socio-cultural and literary importance, Waris Shah not only spoke about cultural aspects of Punjab but also wrote on decadent traditions, exploitation of clergy and the feudal class, as well. On the third day of the festival, a large number of people came to watch the drama, Heer, performed by Sangat Theatre.
