ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said Friday that the name of the new Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan (CEC) would be announced before December 1.

Speaking to media representatives outside the Parliament House in the federal capital, Shah said that appointing a new CEC is the responsibility of both the government and the opposition, adding that due to the need of a mutual agreement, there had been a delay in the appointment.

He further said that he would speak to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with regards to the CEC appointment, and also mentioned that he had received a phone call from the premier today in this regard but he was attending the National Assembly session at that time.

He said that apart from the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), all parties had agreed on former chief justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani for the CEC post.

Earlier this week, the government had sought additional time from the Supreme Court for the appointment of a new CEC.

Taking a dig at PTI chief Imran Khan, Shah said that those who protest outside the Parliament House should not point fingers at others.

The opposition leader said that Khan should fight with the government instead of the state, adding that the PTI leader's statements amount to challenging the state.

Regarding implementation of peace in Islamabad on November 30, Shah said that the government should follow court orders.
