ISLAMABAD: Italy, an important part of the Nato forces in Afghanistan, praised Pakistan's role on Monday in promoting regional peace and stability, particularly in Afghanistan.

"Italy is committed to further deepening its already strong defence ties with Pakistan," General Claudio Graziano Chief of Staff of Italian Army remarked during his meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

Both the generals discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including defence and security cooperation and measures contributing towards regional stability, an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.

General Raheel reiterated the commitment and resilience of the people of Pakistan and its armed forces in confronting multifarious security challenges.

General Claudio Graziano was given a guard of honour on his arrival at the GHQ.

He also laid a floral wreath at the Yadgar–i–Shuhada while paying tribute to the sacrifices of Pakistan's armed forces.
