Gold City strikes gold in Eid ul-Azha Cup

KARACHI: Rank outsider chestnut colt Gold City sprang a surprise while lowering the colours of fancied mare National Queen in the Eid-ul-Azha Cup in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Ably ridden by seasoned rider Moham­mad Essa, the four-year-old colt galloped to a four-length victory over the National Queen to win the honours as favourites swept all but one race of the day’s card.

Colt Touching Star finished third four lengths behind while another colt Cash The Cheque completed the frame finishing a further two-and-a half lengths away among six starters.

In an earlier race, two-year-old bay colt Kings Man annexed The Kingree Lodge Performance Cup with rider Zubair Ahmed astride.

Having content with second place in The Youngster Cup under same rider, Kings Man won as he pleased by a massive eight lengths over filly Stylish.

No Fear and debutant Boogie Man followed the two in same order on the board.

First Night, a three-year-old bay filly, completed hat-trick by getting the better of Sensational by three lengths and-a-half. Essa had partnered all the three winners. Sunday’s win helped him complete a double with Gold City being other winner.

At the outset, bay colt Karobar stretched his winning run by powering to a fluent five lengths victory over Shahzad Love.

Wait A Second, formerly Wait A Minute, made it three on the trot imposing to eight lengths and-a-quarter victory over Janisar to claim the second race.

Medusa, a four-year-old bay filly, atoned to her previous loss storming to a splendid nine lengths victory over Happy Lady. The filly was piloted home by Ghulam Shabbir II.

Trainer Mohyuddin and M. Rafiq K sent two winners apiece the former’s winners being Karobar and Kings Man and the latter’s winners were Wait A Second and Medusa.
