PESHAWAR, Sept 3: A two-member bench of the Peshawar High Court on Wednesday ordered constitution of a medical board for examining former excise and taxation officer Abdul Hameed Marwat on his writ petition seeking release on bail.

The bench comprising Justice Tariq Pervez and Justice Shehzad Akber directed that the petitioner should be admitted to Khyber Teaching Hospital.

Another appeal of the petitioner against his conviction by an accountability court is pending before an accountability appellate bench of the high court.

Advocate Qazi Muhammad Anwer appeared for the petitioner and argued that his client was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau on April 18, 2001, on the charge of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Mr Anwer stated that Marwat was sentenced by an accountability court to three-year imprisonment with Rs8.51 million fine. The benefit of Section 282-B of the CrPC was also extended to him.

But his client had already completed three years in jail before his conviction by the court, he told the court.

The counsel contended that the petitioner had been suffering from different serious ailments, especially cardiac disease and diabetes.
