RAWALPINDI: A man was killed and his mother critically injured when two men opened fire on them in the densely populated Bagh Sardaran area on Monday.

The attack spread panic among the residents of the area who reacted by overpowering the attackers, beating them and then handing them over to the police. The attackers are reported to be brothers, residents of Pirwadhai area.

It was a petty dispute between young men that led to a clash among elders and loss of a life,” Sub-Inspector Saleh Mohammad told Dawn.

According to police sources, Jamila and Ishfaq Butt were at home when – Saddam Hussain and Ishfaq Khan – arrived there and started exchanging hot words with the two over a dispute that had started earlier in the day.

During the quarrel the two brothers pulled out a pistol and shot at Jamila and Ishfaq.

When the neighbours heard the gunshots, they arrived at the scene and started beating the attackers.

Jamila sustained bullet injuries in her jaw and her skull. She was taken to Holy Family Hospital, where she was operated upon.

Preliminary police investigation revealed that earlier in the day, the deceased Ishfaq had argued with salesmen Ghaffar Khan and Ali at a nearby shop.
