KARACHI: Rescue teams recovered the bodies of six more people who had drowned while bathing in the sea at Clifton beach, taking the toll to 31, DawnNews reported.

Twenty-five bodies were pulled out at different points of Clifton and Hawksbay beaches on Wednesday and Thursday. Whereas, an additional six bodies were recovered from the Clifton beach today.

Earlier, reports were also received about two bodies recovered from Sunehra (Golden) beach. However, this could not be confirmed.

Meanwhile, a search was under way for missing beach-goers.

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui said Pakistan Navy helicopters were also being used in the rescue operation.

Siddiqui had earlier appealed to the people to not violate the ban imposed on entering or bathing in the sea due to rough sea conditions.

High number of drowning incidents

Experts said that the high number of drownings may have occurred due to dredging activities carried out near the coast for the extension of Karachi port operations.
