LARKANA, July 15: Advocate Qadir Bakhsh Bhatti filed a constitutional petition in Sindh High Court, Larkana circuit bench, here on Tuesday, praying that the district and Taluka Nazim be directed to bring an end to sewerage crisis in the city.

The collapse of main sewerage line on Bakrani Road has led to accumulation of gutter water on main roads and streets of the city.

Mr Bhatti stated in his petition that both the Nazims were unfit for their offices and prayed that they should be asked to restore cleanliness in the city in a week.

The court fixed 17 July for hearing the petition.

Meanwhile, the shopkeepers of Royal Road and Jinnah Bagh Road held a demonstration outside the press club and also burnt tyres to protest over the flow of gutter water on city roads.

On the other hand, the engineering wing of the Larkana Taluka council has failed to repair the main sewerage line which had collapsed at two points on Bakrani Road four days ago.

The situation is getting worse as there is no alternate way to drain out gushing water from the line.

The roof of one of the shops constructed on main sewerage line has collapsed and blocked the water flow in the drain.

Right from the shops to main disposal point, the encroachers have built different structures on the main sewerage line.

The chief sanitary inspector told this correspondent that it was hard to even locate the manholes which had also been encroached upon.

Gutter water is also standing in many localities and has flooded main roads of the city.

The affected areas include Karma Bagh Mohalla, Jatoi Mohalla, Kausar Mills, Allahabad, Jhangal Shah and Sabzi Mandi.

When this correspondent tried to contact the Taluka Nazim to seek his comments, he was said to be in Karachi to attend a meeting.

Similarly an attempt to contact the Naib Nazim of the taluka council also remained fruitless.

PRISONER DIES: An under-trial prisoner, Karim Bakhsh Mirani, who was admitted in the Chandka Medical College Teaching Hospital with complaints of diarrhoea and abdominal cramps died on late Monday night.

He was arrested and sent behind bars in a theft case registered with the Dhamraho police station.
