QUETTA: Environmental Tribunal judge Sakhi Sultan was killed in a firing incident in Quetta’s Jinnah Town area on Friday, DawnNews reported.

Mehmood Notezai, the Superintendent of Police Quetta, told Dawn that armed militants entered his office and killed him on the spot.

He said the assailants drove away on their motorcycle after the attack.

"Sakhi Sultan was serving as the judge of environmental tribunal for last few years," he added.

The judge's body was shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta.

Several members of the legal fraternity and the deceased judge's family gathered at the hospital.

Sakhi Sultan was said to be an eminent social figure, and in the past he had also been associated with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The Balochistan Bar Association announced three days of mourning against the cold-blooded murder of Sakhi.

President of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Balochistan Mir Sadiq Umrani also announced three days of mourning against the incident. "Sakhi Sultan was the member of federal executive council of PPP," Umrani told Dawn via telephone.

He said the government had failed to protect the lives and properties of masses.

"There is no rule of law," Umrani lamented, demanding the immediate arrest of culprits behind the incident.

Sakhi Sultan had also served as Advocate General Balochistan during the tenure of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

He had moreover served as the President of the Balochistan Bar Association and was a member of Supreme Court Bar Association.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
