QUETTA: Haji Muhammad Alam Jattak, president of the Khuzdar city chapter of Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N), was shot dead in the early hours of Friday when unidentified gunmen riding a motorbike opened fire at him in Balochistan's Khuzdar district.

A police official in Khuzdar told Dawn that two motorcycle-riding assailants attacked Jattak near Civil Hospital Khuzdar.

"Jattak died on the spot," the official said, adding that the attackers had managed to escape.

Police personnel and rescue teams immediately reached the location and shifted Jattak's body to Civil Hospital Khuzdar.

Apart from being the president of PML-N's Khuzdar chapter, Jattak was the vice president of the traders' community in Khuzdar.

Anxiety and panic gripped the city in the wake of the shooting.

The attack is believed to be an act of targeted killing and while no claim of responsibility has so far been made, police suspect that a separatist group may be behind the incident.
