KARACHI: Another Asian Power — Indonesia — has called for “an early solution” of the Kashmir dispute “in accordance with the wishes of the people of the state and other provisions as envisaged in the Security Council resolutions”.

Indonesia is the third Asian country to offer forthright support, in the past two months, to the United Nations resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, being disputed by India on the plea that they had become obsolete. The other two were China and Iraq.

A joint communiqué issued yesterday simultaneously from Jakarta and Karachi on the talks between Mr Z.A. Bhutto and the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Mr Subandrio, held in Jakarta on April 15, said: “The two Foreign Ministers reiterated their adherence to the 10 principles included in the declaration on promotion of world peace and cooperation adopted at the Bandung Conference.”

“In this context,” the communiqué said, “they recalled with regret that the dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir has not been solved peacefully and might even constitute a threat to peace and stability in the region.”
