CHITRAL: Sardar Hussain of PPP won the re-polling conducted in seven polling stations of PK-90 Chitral-II seat, defeating Ghulam Mohammad of APML to return to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly.

According to unofficial results, Mr Hussain bagged 1,778 votes against 1,528 secured of APML contestant.

An election tribunal had ordered re-polling in the seven polling stations while deciding an election petition of the PPP candidate against his rival, Ghulam Mohammad, who had won the May 2013 election by only six votes.

As per results, Mr Hussain polled 246 votes in Mastuj polling station, 231 in Barum Oveer, 256 in Charun Oveer, 73 in Zezdi, 160 in Awi Lusht, 503 in Booni and 309 in Sor Rech polling station.

Ghulam Mohammad bagged 127 votes in Mastuj polling station, 352 in Barum Oveer, 160 in Charun Oveer, 196 in Zezdi, 80 in Awi Lusht, 293 in Booni and 320 in Sor Rech polling station.

Out of the total 5,032 votes, 3,306 votes were cast in the seven polling stations with 66 per cent turnout.

The polling process was held in a peaceful atmosphere despite the fact that all the seven polling stations had been declared sensitive and heavy contingent of police was deployed to avert any unpleasant situation between the highly charged supporters of the two candidates.

Chitral deputy commissioner Mohammad Shoaib Jadoon told Dawn that no untoward incident took place in any of the seven polling stations. He said he remained present in the area to closely watch the situation.

The voters came to the polling stations in droves to cast their vote.

Rahmat Shah, who cast his vote in Booni polling station, said that he was a daily wager in Rawalpindi and used to return to his native town in May, every year, but this time he had to rush back two months earlier.

Bibi Shereen, 35, a handicapped woman, said that she knew the value of her vote which was not simply a piece of paper but it had the potential to change their future.
