KARACHI, June 25: The city government has allocated Rs30 million for the development and improvement of the coastal areas of Karachi for recreational purposes and promotion of local tourism.

The uplift works will commence from July 1. The last major development at the seaside was made by the defunct KDA nearly two decades ago, but they could not sustain it.

The city government will beautify the seaside falling under its jurisdiction in a fashion similar to that of the Sea View. Safari Park and the fish aquarium have been listed as new projects in the city government budget for 2003-2004.

The aquarium at Clifton has been closed for about 15 years and Safari Park too has remained incomplete for years.

A number of development schemes are also being carried out through the Khushhal Pakistan Programme, which are funded by the Sindh government exclusively, and are being executed under the supervision of the city government.

The city government has adopted various steps to alleviate the traffic problems.

The large roundabout at Guru Mandir, Numaish, Five Star Chowrangi, Nagin Chowrangi, Aisha Manzil and Water Pump at Super Highway, Board Office Nazimabad and Banaras Chowrangi has been removed, while wide roads had been constructed. The FTC flyover was also being constructed, while the Shah Faisal Colony flyover would be inaugurated shortly. — PPI
