LAHORE: Wapda recorded second consecutive victory in the National Hockey Championship as they toppled the Port Qasim Authority (PQA) 3-0 at the Johar Town Stadium here on Friday.

Wapda, who had crushed Police 8-1 in the opener, led the first half by a solitary goal scored by Salman Hussain in the 34th minute. After missing a couple of open net chances, Wapda drew the first blood when Salman received the ball at the 25-yard line and displaying skilful hockey dodged a couple of PQA defenders to score on a solo effort.

After half-time, Aleem Bilal doubled the lead, converting the fourth short-corner in the 52nd minute. And Mohammad Jaffar made it 3-0 in the 67th on a field attempt.

Meanwhile, a star-studded Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) chalked up a 4-2 win against the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in the day’s second match.

International Shakeel Abbasi gave the SSGC an early lead when he scored on a field effort in the sixth minute. Eight minutes later, Abbas Haider made it 2-0, also in a field attempt.

The HEC scored their first goal through Zeeshan Akram, who claimed both the goals. He found the cage first in the 26th minute to reduce the lead to 2-1. However, the SSGC again consolidated the lead when Mubashir Ali capitalised on the third short-corner in the 35th minute, as the first half concluded with the SSGC leading 3-1.

After half-time, the game started on a fast pace as international Mohammad Tousiq made things difficult for the HEC scoring in the 37th minute through a field attempt to give his side 4-1 lead.

Two minutes later, Zeeshan registered his second goal for the HEC but that proved the last one of the match as the SSGC went on to win the match.

Saturday’s matches: Army v PTV, PIA v NBP
