LAHORE: The Government of West Pakistan tonight [Nov 7] banned the publication of the daily “Kohistan” for two months and arrested the Managing Editor, Sheikh Hamid Mahmud, and the Editor of the paper, Mr Ali Rizvi.

The Chief Editor of the paper, Mr Nasim Hijazi, was arrested in Rawalpindi, according to a report received from there. The arrests in Lahore were made this afternoon under Section 16 of the West Pakistan Public Maintenance of Order Ordinance.

The arrests were reported to have been made following the publication in the paper of a news story connected with the students’ demonstration yesterday.

Mr Nasim Hijazi, who was arrested in Rawalpindi, was later removed to Lahore for interrogation in connection with a news item published today in the daily “Kohistan” which was later contradicted by the Government.

A bail application on behalf of Mr Hamid Mahmud and Mr Ali Rizvi was presented before the Magistrate concerned soon after their arrest. Mr Hamid Mahmud and Mr Ali Rizvi were taken to the Central Police Office shortly after their arrest. They were reported to have been interrogated there by the officials of the CID. — Agencies
