ECP prepares schedules for LG polls

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has prepared proposed schedules of local government elections to be held in the provinces of Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan, sources told DawnNews on Monday.

A key meeting of the Election Commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice Tassaduq Jilani, was held in the federal capital today. The meeting was attended by the election commissioners and members of all the four provinces.

During the meeting, final approval was given for conducting local body elections in Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has yet to recommend a date to the ECP for holding local government elections in the province.

According to the proposed schedule of Sindh, local body elections would be held on November 27. The nomination papers of the candidates would be received by November 5, which would be scrutinised from November 7 to 8. Electoral symbols for the running candidates would be allotted on November 13. Polling would take place on November 27 and the official results would be released on November 30.

On the other hand, elections in Punjab and Balochistan would be held on December 7. According to the proposed schedule, nomination papers would be received from November 8 to 10 for local body elections in Punjab and Balochistan. Objections to the nominations would be received by November 12. Meanwhile, scrutiny of the nomination papers would be completed from November 13 to 15.

Nomination papers can be withdrawn by November 22. The candidates would be allotted electoral symbols on November 27 whereas polling would commence on December 7. Official results would be released on December 10.
