KARACHI, Sept 20: Police on Friday booked a member of the national assembly belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in the murder case of the banned Peoples Amn Committee leader Zafar Baloch.

City division SSP Faisal Bashir Memon told Dawn that an FIR was lodged against MQM lawmaker Nabil Gabol on a complaint of Mohammad Ali Baloch, the father of the slain leader.

He explained that Mr Gabol was nominated for his alleged abetment in the murder.

The case was registered at the Kalakot police station under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 109 (abetment) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The SP said that four other unidentified persons were also booked in the case. Zafar Baloch along with an aide was gunned down by armed motorcyclists near Bizenjo Chowk in Kalakot on Sept 18.

MQM condemns ‘fake’ case

Condemning the registration of the case against Mr Gabol, the MQM said that he was in Islamabad for the past many days in connection with the national assembly session, but despite this he was falsely implicated in the case.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, the MQM coordination committee said that the registration of the ‘fake’ case against Mr Gabol, who was elected MNA from NA-246 (Azizabad), was part of an anti-MQM agenda and an attempt to protect the real killers and their patrons.

It called upon the president, the prime minister and the federal interior minister to take notice of the ‘fake’ case against the MQM lawmaker and withdraw the FIR forthwith.
