Recitation of Quranic verse: SC moved to disqualify Aitzaz

ISLAMABAD: A petitioner has requested the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan to disqualify Senator Aitzaz Ahsan for incorrectly reciting a Surah (verse) from the Holy Quran.

Television footage aired on Sunday showed the Pakistan People’s Party leader ‘incorrectly’ reciting the Quranic verse during a reception ceremony in Lahore for former president Asif Ali Zardari. The videos showed Ahsan trying to recite Surah Ikhlaas twice, but failing to do so correctly.

Dr. Abid Rauf Orakzai, of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), pleads that the court should order the Chairman Senate to direct the issue to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The petitioner argues that Surah-e-Ikhlaas is a foundation of Tauheed (the basic pillar of Islam), and by not being able to recite it correctly Aitzaz Ahsan is not eligible to be a member of Parliament.

He further requested the court to ask Ahsan to recite the first and second Kalmas and offer Salah.

The federal government and chief election commissioner and the PPP leader have been made parties in the petition.

This is not the first time that such a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court for against a parliamentarian for ‘incorrect’ recitations of holy texts.

In January 2011 the court was moved against former Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, for incorrectly reciting the Surah Ikhlaas.

According to Article 62 of the constitution of Pakistan, a member of Parliament should not “violate(s) Islamic Injunctions,” should have “adequate knowledge of Islamic teachings,” and practices “obligatory duties prescribed by Islam.”

Is this the only DEFINING qualification of PPP's top brass? It was not long ago when the ex-Interior Minister failed miserably in his attempts to read from a written Quranic script in one of the cabinet meetings. He too had cut such a sorry figure. SHAME!

Not at all surprised. In fact we have been focusing our whole energy in grooming our children towards getting them the so called English education and totally ignoring them from the basic teachings of Islam. How many of us offer prayers 5 times a day - forget about the recitation of Holy Quran as we as a parents hardly pay serious attention in getting our children taught Holy Quran from the best tutor. May Almighty Allah forgive us and guide us the correct Path. Aameen

If it is really true, then this is highly shameful, totally unwarranted, grossly unacceptable and absolutely uncalled for, to say the least. All Muslims know very well the importance of 'Surah-e-Ikhaas' from the 30th and last 'seepara' of the Holy Quran. Apart from being one of the four 'Qul' Surahs, all of which start from the word 'Qul' which means 'say', it is one of the easiest but most important Surahs of the Holy Quran. Generally speaking, by the time a Muslim kid is six or seven years old, he or she is able to 'remember by heart' the great 'Surah-e-Ikhlas' along with the other three Surahs starting with the word 'Qul.' If a person of Barrister Aitezaz Ahsan's stature is unable to properly read 'Surah-e-Ikhaas' which is one of fundamental Surahs of the Holy Quran and also one of the shortest and the easiest to remember for any ordinary Muslim no matter where he or she stem from, then may God Almighty save the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, its land and people, from this type of so-called Muslim leaders. In particular the leaders who proclaim to be top attorneys or # one lawyers of the country but openly make a mockery of the law in general and the article 62 of the constitution of the country in particular. What about politicians from religious minority groups e.g. Christians, Hindus, etc? Do they need to recite Surah Ikhlas too to be a part of the government/parliament/senate? I am sure Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman can recite Surah Ikhlas quite well, but does that make him a better politican or human being than other people?

Although not a fan of Aitizaz Ahsan by any means, Dr. Abid Rauf Orakzai should know that the basic qualification for someone to be a Muslim is to be able to recite the shahadah (There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad saw is the prophet of God). Beyond that, not being able to recite a surah properly, specially when Arabic is not ones mother tongue, is not an issue that puts one outside the pale of Islam. Yes Ahsan sahib would do well to memorize the basic surahs, but there is no need to politicize this issue.

Mr Orakzai is not having good enough clients these days to exhibit his expertise and be prominent in the country.Taking Mr Aitezaz in the court of law has made him known in a flash.He got his objective.I am sure Mr Aitezaz is not a Qaari by profession and therefore can be excused.After all reciting in private is one thing and doing it in public is altogether different.

@Anees: If this reported News is true then i may opinion , that he had already learnt it from Baba Rehman Malik . the Ustad ( The teacher ) tried 3 times on the live TV coverage in a cabnit meeting But failed so the Pir (the PM Gilani came to his rescue .... I saw and heard it with my eyes/ears ) , The Shagir ( student ) is reported to have tried Twice , unfortunately there was no Pir around ?/? . I guess he should have asked The Pir of Balawal House ( AAZ) to come to his rescue .... We are told during his 11 years in jail, AAZ was also praying , so may be he could still remember how to recite Surah Ikhlas properly , as its the baisc surah any muslim child learn to recite in the prayers along with surah fatiyah

If supreme court disqualifies Aitazaz for not reciting the Holy Quran correctly, then it will have to disqualify many people for not observing fast correctly, still more for not saying five obligatory prayers correctly. Then the supreme court will also have to disqualify many in the business class for not giving correct measures, for hiding their taxable incomes and for misleading the customers. The SC will have its hands full until the time when it has disqualified everyone from the public and private offices. Only those individuals will succeed in evading the iron hand of law who butcher, maim and murder the innocent people the 'correct' way.

May be I would sound a bit blasphemous to some so called "righteous muslims", if he has made a mistake in reciting Sura e Ikhlas, what's a big deal in it??? not everybody has memorised the Quran completely, and I believe we all should try but it doesn't make a person bad muslim if he unintentionally makes small mistakes while reciting Quran. The main thing we all muslims are missing is to understand the true meaning of Quran. This stupid petitioner should know this thing as well.

@Goga Nalaik: lolz its not a matter of Molvi yar, its Islamic state and we should respect to know the constitution and our leaders should know the basic of Quran and sunna, This chapter iqlas is a basic surrah and easy to learn. so we should take positive and Mr. Ch. should learn and realized its human mistake and also believing that its between him and God, maybe his intention is positive and take courage to recite the quran, even molvi also does mistake in recitation as well. In end we should learn the Quran and act on it as a Muslims and should respect others as well. Thanks

Of course it was not a good moment for him but we are not entitled to judge whether he is a good muslim or not; may be he was overexcited; it is for Allah to measure his act and Allah is Merciful. I am more concerned if he has the guts to ask PPP leaders to bring back their money kept outside Pakistan, to pay taxes regularly and honestly. I think he should do something really good for Pakistan.

Why PPP leaders try to portray themself as practicing Muslims when they know that they are not. It is extreme of bigitory and disrespect for the great religion of Islam and for our beloved prophet Muhammad. I humbley request all the PPP leaders to either learn the surah before you go on try to recite on the stage or don't insult the religion of Islam. It is greatest shame for every Pakistani to have a senetor for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan not able to fullfil the basic requirement of Islam. I humbly request the supreme court of Pakistan to make it compulsory for every memeber of parliment to recite and prove that he is able to fullfil the basic requirements of being a muslim. Please make it a law abd never allow any body to exploit it no matter what. I feel asahamed to belong to a country where we have people like him representing us in the internation community. We already have aquestionable reputation and now even that is gone. May God save us all from leaders like there.

I am no one to call anyone Muslim or not but as a citizen of Islamic Republic of Pakistan I would at least demand my leaders to know the bases of religion. Wow, so the only qualification people need for public office is to recite a Quranic verses in rote memory. In a language majority of fellow citizens either don't understand neither can they read. Being an expert on the national constitution and law is not enough. Neither are the sacrifices, of being put under house arrest, beaten on the streets by dictatorial thugs, dragged to jail for the sake of rule of law. When is this country going to learn that there is so much to governing then being able to recite a verse or two of the Quran. Just look at all the countries where Quran is not recited at the beginning of their govt proceedings. How well they are being run. If Quran was seperated from the governance, in my humble opinion the country will run much better.

It should also be ascertained whether he was able to recite the rituals at the time of his Nikkah to Bushra or not.

Knowing a verse in arabic is not important, if he knows the meaning and substance of touheed, in my humble view, that is what matters. Millions in our daily routines recite verses without knowing the meaning; should focus more on what it means than the recitation.

It is pathetic. Not that he cannot recite a small verse of the holy Quran but the fact that this is being used to ask for his disqualification from Senate. Time to remove Article 62 from the constitution of Pakistan. Religion should be private, between a person and his/her God and not a tool for discrimination. Please separate religion from Politics. Europe was able to progress after they did that.

Reman Malik and Aitzaz Ahsan could not read one of the basic and most common verses of the holy Quran. Most Muslims memorize Sura Ikhlas by heart. I am sure that these two gentlemen are embarrassed and ashamed. But there is another fact that should be realized here: why every meeting or assembly is converted into a religious congregation. There is a place for religion in our lives, but dragging it unnecessarily into every situation is counter productive. This practice does not make us better Muslims.

As stated above there is no requirement in Article 62 that a MP should be able to recite verses from the Quran.So there is no legal justification for his ouster.Having said that this chap being a Barrister at a law should know his own limitations.Have some ba..s and admit your weakness instead of making an a.. of yourself in the public.

We seemed to be doomed as a nation and society and the speed to this doom is obviously accelerating. When everything people think, say and do is measured in religious terms and analyzed and judged by religious control freak zealots, soon nobody will be able to say much in fear of being blasphemous or wrong or not religious enough. Don't we have much more pressing problems like poverty, economy, education, health care to focus our energies on rather than this. God help us.

May be Aitzaz is still a better person than the one who correctly reads the surah. If he is a barrister he should be judged on the basis of his abilities or knowledge about law. Religion is something personal.

@OMG: No body had asked him to speak or deliver any lecture in foreign language where as he does speak a few foreign language fluently. He had taken on to himself to recite a small chapter from the Holy Quran which is part of his faith ( as declared by him on public records) and he should be reciting every day if he practices his faith. His in- ability to recite correctly exposed him as a non practicing name sake follower of faith.

It looks that the supreme court has no time to listen the cases against the Islamic Injunctions. The "Interest" is haraam and the Federal Shariat Court has already declared it against the islamic law. But the supreme court has no time to look into it and order for the implementation of the order of FSC.

Interesting! I saw the video. I am not a PPP fan and I am not a lawyer. But, let's examine this more objectively without getting emotional and excited. Two possibilities exist: 1. He really did not know how to complete Sura Ikhlas. 2. He knew the Sura very well, but stumbled and made a MISTAKE. He is an experienced lawyer and would never attempt to recite a sura, which is not sure about it. Secondly, he surely looked over excited at the event and was definitely overwhelmed. It is very possible to not being able to recall even the commonest phrase, most commonly the names of the people, particularly when we are in over-excitement mode. I think, he made a mistake and should be ignored.

He can say I am a law expert and great politician. What I hacve to do with the recitation of Quran. This is the job of Molvis. He is capable of saying what he wants to say. Will he nopw announce his retirement from politics and Honourable Chief Justice disqualify him from being a member of Senete?

In the opinion of intellectuals, it is not a matter to scandalize it as an issue of religion level. Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan forgot a verse of Surah-e-Ekhlaas due to obvious reasons of noisy gathering where he was already heavily exerted. This happens normally by Hufaz Sahiban who correct it themselves or are corrected by others listening to them. Here the point to be noted is Aitzaz's reaction on such mistake. He immediately said "ASTAGHFERULLAH". This act clearly shows that he has complete knowledge of religion. Definitely God shall forgive him but people of narrow vision and mullahs shall continue beating the air.

Religion is a personal matter for all in Pakistan. I fully agree with this but when a member parliament who claims to be a Muslim has not memorized Surah-Ikhlaas so why he is reading it in public. May be his memory has shrunk because of his age. I think he should be disqualified because of his memory.

There is an exception, that of senility and inability to recite prayers, due to which prayers get exempted. But in such exceptions one can also not practise law or work. Another example, one's fasts are exempted due to illness, to be made up when recovered. There may be extenuating circumstances, but in this case they would be very binding and limiting for Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan.
